The problem is the ignition system, you will have to take it to mercedes and have the complete ignition system changed, it could even be the key itself, u need to get it diagnosed by a computer, preferabally someone who has a mb star.

This is a very serious situation as there are only a few ways you can go about this.
The surest way out of this is to call a mechanic over and have him help you open the lock from outside.
He can do this by picking the lock or by working on the door panel.
There is no other secure method as the car would not come on neither will it open.
hope this helped you? Please comment for more information.

I have a 2001 E200 Mercedes Benz. About six months ago when I insert the electronic key into the ignition, it does not give the ****-in sound which allows me to turn the key. I took the car to a MB dealer where it was diagnosed with the MB Star and I was asked to replace the steering lock (sensor) which I did. The worked perfectly well after that until about 2 weeks ago. I noticed a slight delay between when I insert the key and when it actually sucks in. And even when it does **** in and all the lights and indicators come on it still takes a few attempts before I could actually start the engine. The delay period widened progressively until it became impossible for me to drive the car. I am now getting 2 different diagnosis from 2 different dealers. The MB dealer says its now my Keys that have expeired and I need to order a new Key, while another Mechanic who used the same MB Star Diagnosis says its my EIS that is bad and says it can either be replaced or repaired. how do I know what the correct diagnosis is? Does the keys really expire??? Can the EIS be repaired???
