94 Camaro V6 transmission in reverse on all shifter settings

I have just started having problems with 4L60E tranny. Yesterday would not lock into park...Today all positions on shifter is reverse, yet if I put it in park we can push the car forward. Has anyone encountered this, and how do we fix it?

  • Rene Bowers Feb 17, 2009

That was the problem...Husband beat on the car to clear the plugs and snapped the cable in two. Cleared the engine though :)

Check to see if your shift cable is stretched or broken, also look on the transmission itself to make sure that the lever where the cable attaches to is not bent. also you can check under the shifter itself and make sure the linkage there is all ok. it sounds like your shifter cable is the cause for your problem.

if the cable is ok and you can see the shift lever move on the transmission than the next likely cause would be the valve body in the transmission.

to add to the solution. you can also pop take the transmission oil pan off and visually check to see if the linkages inside are working properly, be carefull not to get debris in the valve body. also you can try popping the shift cable off the transmission lever and moving it by hand to see if it will go into all gears that way. make sure someone is in the car holding the brake on. it is best to try this with the car jacked up that way it won't move on you.

Not shifting

Have you checked your automatic transmission fluid. If the shaft came out of the tail of the transmission, you loose fluid and that's what it sounds like as far as the symptom you described. As far as the speedo not working, I would check all your connectors on the transmission to make sure when the drive shaft came off it didn't knock off your connector.

4l60e tranny swap

No the 4l60e is a electronic transmission you need to find a 700r4 transmission which are very common. Check with your local junk yards and are pretty easy to install. About a full days worth of work for a person with general know how of vehicles.

94 blazer s10 4l60e and the 94 fullsize blazer 4l60e are they the same transmission could i use a s10 tranny for my fullsize blazer ?? i know the bolt for the plate are 3 on each side for mine and the s10...

Installing the full-size Blazer trans into the S-10 would be safer. As long as they came off of the same size engine then yes, they will interchange. But.... the trans off of the S-10 is not built as strong as the trans for the full-sized Blazer, clutch capacity is less, band servo may have smaller apply area, and torque convertor stall speed may different enough to set a "code". Towing capability would be compromised. I have no idea what you meant by the "bolt for the plate".

Bought the wrong 700r4?!

I believe the bolt pattern is the same that transmission should bolt up to your v-8 assuming it's a small block, the transmission should work fine, you may need to modify the shifter but everything else should be compatible, if your v-8 is carberated make sure you have the correct throttle link set up because correct tv cable adjustment is critical, the v-6 transmission may have a lighter stack up in the 3-4 drum so dont be to hard on it while in 3rd or 4th.

good luck

94 v6 camaro automatic.. no reverse or neutral.

Sounds like you may have burned out the reverse clutch pack inside the transmission by going from drive to reverse. I would recommend seeing a transmission shop for verification. Hope this helps

Locked up Tranny, 94 camaro

It might have already had a condition the shop did fix with the clutches or valve body and if it is an automatic tranny it might be trying to go into forward and reverse at the same time, it will have to be taken out of the car and repair with new clutches and possilby some other parts ..
