Smoking wrx HI guys.Once my 2001 subaru wrx has been started,it will begin to smoke out the exhaust and around the turbo, but only when the car is reved,if left to idle,no smoke????

Have you checked the oil lately? It sounds like you blew a seal in the turbo and you have oil leaking into the exhaust. Annoying, but not deadly as long as you keep an eye on the oil level.

Good luck with the smell even after you fix it. I replaced the turbo in my Legacy GT six months ago and I can still smell burning oil when I get on the gas.

Hi , I`m not sure about the 01 model but the 98 model got this roker cover gasket problem because it`s too close to the exhaust and with time can`t handle the heat.So when you rev the car , dropping oil on to the exhaust and one little drop of oil can make big smoke which coming up around the turbo. Hope this helps .

Can you or someone observe the color of the smoke as you increase the RPM?===Before you next oil change. Do an engine flush. This will clean out the piston rings and internal of the head.=== You can CAREFULLY listen to the turbo bearing with a stick. Place a stick and CARFULLY listen for the turbo operate.
If it's the org. engine it will has over 90,000 miles on it.
It's normal to has the valve stem seal/oil seal on the head to leak oil into the cyclinder.
The longer the car sit the more oil accumulated.
The smoke you see is the motor oil drop from the seals.

It land on the top of the cyclinders and it create black smoke at start up.

The inexpensive fix is to start using high mileage oil with seal conditioner.
This will help soften the rubber seals and help reduce internal oil leak.

The correct fix is to wait until it's time for a head gasket replacement and let the professional service the head.

Complete head service is the only method to stop this internal oil drip problem.

Expect to hear your head gasket needs replacing, at a minimum. White smoke means it's burning coolant. How much it will cost I can only guess, but usually a head gasket repair- a few hundred dollars-it's pretty time consuming and labor intensive, especially with all the turbo stuff that could be in the way. Good luck.

hi check the exaust for smoke if its smoking a white or a blue smoke it means the motor is worn, but i would try changing the ignitor or ecu 1st as they send the ignition pulse telling the cylinders to spark, if either is stuffed that could cause your problem

White smoke is usually coolant, oil is usually a blue color, most turbos r cooled by coolant so U may have a coolant leak in the turbo, may B a seal or crack in the turbo. Check your coolant level occasionally to C if it drops.

smell the exhaust first, if it is sweet smelling, it may be the headgasket.
