Have 97 Cavalier 2.4L. Engine coolant light keeps coming on. Coolant level is ok, engine is not running hot according to temp gauge, car had new water pump and timing chain installed about 2 yrs ago.

Leave the radiator cap off, turn the engine on and let it
run until the radiator "burps": You will see the coolant level drop and
may see or hear a large air bubble come to the top as the system burps.
Keep an eye on the temperature gauge throughout this process
Refill the radiator to the top and coolant reservoir as needed.
Put the radiator cap back on.
Note that if the engine runs hot after this procedure there
may have been another pocket of air that "burped." Let the engine cool
down and then add more coolant to both the radiator and the coolant
reservoir.
What engine 2.2 or 2.4 ?
Important: On vehicles equipped with the 2.4L engine, open the coolant air bleed valve. The coolant air bleed valve is located on the top of the thermostat bypass pipe/heater pipe assembly. Close the valve once a continuous stream of coolant is expelled from the valve.
Does the cooling fan come on ?
Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL™ coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL™ is added to the system, the engine coolant will require change sooner: at 50 000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.
Close the radiator drain ****. Remove the drain hose.
If previously removed, install the engine block drain plugs.
When installing the drain plugs, use pipe sealer GM P/N 12346004.
Important: On vehicles equipped with the 2.4L engine, open the coolant air bleed valve. The coolant air bleed valve is located on the top of the thermostat bypass pipe/heater pipe assembly. Close the valve once a continuous stream of coolant is expelled from the valve.
Fill the surge tank to the base of the filler neck.
Start the engine with the pressure cap off. Let the engine run until the upper radiator hose starts to get hot.
If the coolant level in the surge tank is low, add the proper mix of coolant until the level reaches the full cold line.
Important: After servicing the cooling system, and if the vehicle is equipped with an intermittent low coolant light, an occasional low coolant light may be encountered during some extreme driving maneuvers. This complaint should be eliminated by removing the surge tank cap and adding coolant to a level just at or above the full cold line when the system is cold.
Install the cap onto the tank with hand tight pressure.
Are you saying the engine is cold but the gauge on the dash is saying the coolant is very hot ? If the engine is cold, the problem could be the gauge or the sending unit. If the engine is getting hot, the problem could be the radiator is low on coolant or has air in the system, or the water pump is not working.
you need to replace thermostat and radiator cap.look under hood around engine compartment.look for a radiator cap near radiator,add 50/50 antifreeze and water to coolant system to bring up boiling point.pure water will cause engine run hotter because water evaporate away,remove radiator pour coolant in the radiator until coolant stop dropping in the radiator now some vechicle pour coolant in the coolant overflow jug,pour coolant until coolant level stop dropping and the coolant level stay at cold full mark.start engie let idle few minutes, watch coolant level in radiator if coolant start dropping add more coolant, when coolant level stop dropping put radiator cap back on let engine idle until both top radaitor hose and bottom coolant hose get warm turn off engine wait until it get cool then take a large rag slightly open radiator just a litle at a time to keep from getting scaled.once radiator remove add more coolant if low,put radiator cap back on start the engine let it idle watch the temp gauge if temperature gauge going hot zone stop engine wait until cool then add more coolant,keep doing this until engine stop overheating going into hot zone and coolant level stop dropping,make the coolant overflow jug coolant level stay at full cold mark, dont let jug run empty if so air will get in the coolant system causing engine to overheat.

First, check the level of coolant. Be sure the engine is not hot when you do this. If the level is ok you probably have a faulty 'coolant temperature sensor'.
If the coolant level is low, add until you are at the 'max' mark on the tank. Run the engine and check for leaks. If you find a leak it must be repaired at a qualified shop.

take the cap off of the radiator (whil engine is cold) start and run the vehicle. keep runnig 30mins after the vehicle is hot keeping notice of the rad fluid level. keeping the cap off will prevent the pressure build up that woiuld keep the air in the system, keep adding water or antifreeze as the level goes down. this may take an hour or so. also with the cap off, you will be able to see if your water pump is operating correctly. you will visibly be able to see movement in the rad when the pum is engaged.
Hey iisha, although obvious, 1st thing to check is the coolant level. If it's low, the engine will run hot and the low level prevents coolant from circulating to the heater core inside the car, so the result is little or no heat, but engine running hot situation. The top rad. hose takes hot coolant from the engine, it flows down thru the radiator where it is cooled (w/ help from the fan) and the coolant returns to the engine at a reduced temp. to keep the temp under control, and it's returned thru the bottom hose (the result is the bottom hose should be cooler thant the top. There's more involved than that, so 1st check your coolant level, if it's ok let me know I'll help further. Hopefully the fix is that simple, and it is a rather common problem.
