Trying to shift from 2wd to 4 low. I push the button on the dash and the 4 low lights flash and I can hear it trying to actuate. The lights will flash for about 10 seconds then it switches to 4 hi. This happens in Park and Neutral both. I disengaged the drive shaft from the rear end and manually turn the transfer case. It is making a clicking noise. Any suggestions? I am very capable of performing the labor, just not flush with cash to throw money at the problem. Planning on pulling transfer case today and doing a visual inspection. Any suggestions. Thanks

There is probably a code that's why the light flashes . There is a control module invloved in the changing of the gears . Your best bet , have it check for codes before removing the transfer case .
More then likely the problem is in the motor of the transfer case controller

I had the same problem on my 90 K1500, it was the 4 wheel drive actuator unit itself. Bout it at the local parts store for 30 bucks and installed it in 10 minutes or less - and vavoom! 4 X 4 back in business.
SOURCE: 4 wheel drive will not engage - how do I troubleshoot
The vacuum switch on the transfercase is most likely the problem. If you remove it and the plunger is stuck in, replace it and your 4wd should engage again.

Sounds like the chain in the transfer case has broke or the linkage is out of adjustment
