Your problem is with the wiring to the neutral safety switch i had the same thing happen to me a mouse got in my car and chewed a bunch of wires on top of the trans and it wouldn\'t shift into second . until i got it on the highway and revved it to 7gs and it would shift in for about 3 to 5 seconds then back out. didn\'t think to look at the harness so changed the tranny when it was over it wouldnt start i guess when we changed it the wires shorted worse stopping it from starting so finally i just got back under it and started going through the wires finally fixed it but i have a wire crossed cause now it shifts but when i put it in low it doesnt downshift to first only works on takeoff from park
If the engine does not crank, are you getting battery power at the starter with the key switch in the start position ?
Will it crank in neutral ?

Your problem is the speed sensor. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
is located on the right side of the transaxle, near where the right side axle shaft
connects to. To access this part is pretty tricky, if you are inexperienced. There
is an aluminum foil covered shield around the wiring connector. You will need to
remove the shield to gain access. You may even have a damaged wiring
connector, that is causing the problem due to the close proximity of this part to
the catalytic converter. If you want to purchase this part from the Ford dealer,
ask the parts counter person for the "basic" part number 9E731. Hope this helps.

if the shifter is loose and sloppy feeling then the shift cable bracket has come loose under the dash at the steering wheel. remove the lower panel under the steering wheel so you can see under the dash then get flash light and look while jiggling the shifter. you should be able to see the cable and bracket. if the bracket is loose then tighten the bolts. note this bracket is at the steering colum.

most likely the shift tube bushings are bad- you may have also lost a few screws in the shift tube or they could just be loose. you have to pull the steernig column down to inspect/repair it.

The shift interlock does not allow the car to shift out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Quick fix is with the car running to set the parking brake and turn the car to off and remover the key. Put the key back in and turn one click to on. Shift the car into neutral and you can start the car and go. The repair for this is either the brake switch located on the brake pedal being replaced. I had a broken wire leading to the switch that caused the problem. It also can be a blown fuse.
