Hello, I recently purchased a 1987 BMW 325 with the manual 5 speed, it has some major issues with find reverse. Nearly having to crack the console to get to it and rarely finding it again, also today it hasn't been able to find first, normally there is a knock or locking sound to tell me its in first and not third, today however the only time I could even get 2nd was to restart the engine and remember to not shift what-so-ever. could it be the linkage, or the gear oil. Im just not sure where to go from here escially not being able to leave 2nd or 3rd gear.
Check the linkage for excessive play if the rubbers are worn out replace them and if you can put the car on the hoist disconnect the linkage under , start the car with another person inside the car to depress the clutch , try each gear at a time to isolate the problem whether its from the transmission or the linkage.
