I have fitted a new fan belt and it squeel's when cold but stops after a few mins ,i assume that the belt is to tight but i have an auto tensioner so how do you tension it correctly ????? thanks
Fan belts (i assume you are using a v belt and not a serpentine --Flat belt) come in several widths. The correct belt should be level with thw outside dia of all the pulleys or just a bit higher. IF it sits down in the groove it is the wrong belt.. If you have a flat belt ensure you have it fitted correctly around all the pulleys and tensioner otherwise the tensioner won't work as designed to

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. There is a chance that the alternator pulley is bad or the alternator is not working properly. This may lead back to a weak battery. You need to check to make sure the battery is holding the proper charge. Check all your terminals and make sure they are clean. There could be a chance that the belt is to tight. There are some belts that can be tightened to much. Some vehicles are equipped with this. This is usually the bottom bolt of the alternator. Try to loosen it a little, not to much and see if that helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and thanks for using FixYa.

The tensioner is defective as you suspect. Your car is 11 years old so you can bet it needs replacing. Once you remove the belt, it is a simple matter to replace the tensioner. You will need simple hand tools.
