SOURCE: no fluid in top radiator hose heat dont stay warm..
try sqeezing the radiator hoses several times, upper and lower and fill coolant if it goes down. this should get the air bubbles out.

I have had this happen with my ranger. Changed everything I could to try to fix the over heating. It turned out that I had a small leak in my head gasket and it was allowing exsaust gas to go into the cooling system witch was over pressurizing it. Also the air from the exsaust will heat up much faster than liquid making your thermostat to read hot and will not be able to blow hot air in the cab because there is no liquid going to the heater core. This happened to me when my blet came off and I tryed to make it home. If you had it over heat for a long peirod of time it may have ripped the head gasket.

The water is from the thermostat housing, fairly common leak. The ticking maybe from the timing chain cassette. You may have already had the cam timing slip (the cam gears are not keyed, they are held in place by torque alone. The oil gauge sounds like an electrical problem (either sender or sender wiring).

feel the hoses that go into the heater core at the firewall,if both are hot, either a door under the dash is stuck shut or you need to flush your heater core by removing both hoses and flush with water hose

You either have some kind of blockage like a plugged radiator or a colapsed hose, or your water pump is not moving any coolant. It's not very common, but it is possible of the impeller inside the pump to come off of the shaft or become so coroded they dont't move the water anymore. (very rare) What you are describing sounds like a plugged radiator, if you can see the tubes at the top of the core when you have the cap off and they have a lot of blockage then they will be like that all the way accross. I have had limited success with store bought chemical flushes from the parts house and a new radiator for this truck is not very expensive and the are super easy to replace.
