That's not smart considering if you idle your DTE will be very wrong.

The DTE is automatic and is the result of your previous miles per gallon multiplied by the gallons of gas registered in your tank.

Unlike the Trip miles, this DTE number can not be reset. It will vary by the fuel mileage per gallon recorded at each startup. That is why if you filled the tank and showed 400DTE you may have had 20 Gallons multiplied by 20 MPG. But if your new average is 16 MPG then it would show 320 DTE.

How do I fix a fuel gage that reads on startup, then drops to empty.

If this vehicle is an early build, you may be able to get the instrument cluster to do a self-test? You press and hold the odometer reset button for 10 seconds, then release. The warning lamps may turn on and off, the gages may have calibrated movements. The odometer may display trouble codes.
I don't have good enough info to troubleshoot all possible issues.

Good day
You have to look in under the dash and make sure the connections at the back of the cluster is in place. If that is all good then check the fuse box and make sure all fuses are in place and working correctly.
Good luck.

Is it at all possible to reset the distance to empty reading on the dash? 2000 linciln towncar cartier

Distance to empty is based on the average fuel economy for the last 500 miles driven. You can reset this by unplugging the battery to set it to default but that is the best you can do.

2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

Gas gauge does not work properly on my 2001 Volvo S80

you have a wire loose or poor connection or the cluster could be going bad.

Fuel gauge not working all the time.

This is a normal concern.
The instrument cluster uses 4 different operating modes to calculate the fuel level:
Anti-slosh (default mode)
Key OFF fueling
Key ON fueling
Recovery
After a fuel fill up, the time for the fuel gauge to move from empty (E) to full (F) ranges from 2 seconds to 55 minutes depending on which operating mode the fuel gauge is in.
The default fuel gauge mode is called the anti-slosh mode. To prevent fuel gauge changes from fuel slosh (gauge instability due to changes in fuel sender readings caused by fuel moving around in the tank), the fuel gauge takes approximately 55 minutes to go from empty (E) to full (F).
The key OFF fueling mode (2 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The key must be in the OFF position throughout the entire refueling of the vehicle.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
The instrument cluster must receive a valid key ON fuel sender reading within 1 second of the key being put into the RUN position. The key ON sample readings are considered valid if the fuel sender reading is between 15 ohms ± 2 ohms and 160 ohms ± 4 ohms.
If these conditions are not met, the fuel gauge stays in the anti-slosh mode, which results in a slow to read full (F) event.
The key ON fueling mode (approximately 90 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The transmission is in PARK (P).
The key is in the RUN position.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
In key ON fueling mode, a 30-second timer activates after the transmission is put into the PARK (P) position (automatic transmissions). When the 30-second time has elapsed and at least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity has been added, the fuel gauge response time is 90 seconds to read from empty (E) to full (F). When the transmission is shifted out of PARK (P), the fuel gauge strategy reverts to the anti-slosh mode. The key on refueling mode prevents slow to read full events from happening if the customer refuels the vehicle with the key in the RUN position.
Recovery mode is incorporated into the instrument cluster strategy to recover from a missing fuel level input during a refueling event. Missing fuel level inputs result from intermittent opens in the fuel sender or its circuits. Recovery mode (empty [E] to full [F] approximately 20 minutes) is initiated when the following 2 conditions are met:
The instrument cluster is in the anti-slosh (default) mode.
The actual fuel level in the tank is greater than what is being displayed by the fuel gauge

2002 Liberty Fuel Gauge Not Working

It may be possible to get instrument cluster to do a self-test? If you want to try this to rule out instrument cluster.
Press and hold odometer reset button, turn key from off to run, run is where the dash lites come on. Any stored 3-digit codes will be displayed in the odometer vf display. The vf display will perform a sequential segment test. All indicators, data controlled, will illuminate. All gauges will cycle in 12.5% or 15% increments. The cluster will automatically exit self-test. The self test does not verify serial data stream. The cluster internally commands all non-hardwired gauges and indicators to operate. The fuel level sending unit sends info to pcm then pcm sends data to instrument cluster.
I don't know if that self-test will work on your vehicle? It won't hurt to try. If all the gages cycle except fuel gage, then I suspect the instrument cluster. You can call around different shops, get an estimate for the repair.
