Coolant is to transfer heat from the block to the radiator by way of water pump. The over flow tank will go down when warm and return when cool

You obviously have a leak somewhere. Check the radiator hoses and heater lines for seepage. It is passable you may have a head gasket problem. If you pull the plugs and see one white or a lot lighter than the rest it could be water ingestion in that cylinder. But check all the hoses first.

that is called the recovery tank and the level should not go down, if u keep seeing the tanks level drop then u have a coolant leak in the system, when u do top the system off ALWAYS USE 50%
