Freezing no heat with temp gauge going to 260 and red light on

I have no heat in the car, the temp gauge goes up and down betwwen 200 and 260. When it reaches 260, the red light comes on and I have to pull over and let the car rest for 20 minutes. However, the engine is not over heating but it thinks it is. Do I need a new thermostat or is it something else?

You didn't say what kind of car it was, but with no heat and high readings on the gauge, my guess would be your coolant level. If that isn't the problem, then try replacing the thermostat. Other possibilities would be a defective temp sensor, or a bad electric fan on the radiator.

Auto coolant hot temp light comes on and temp gauge goes up more when idling at a light

If temp gauge is going into the red on a 3.4 engine it must be shut down or head damage can happen within minutes. I have a Monte Carlo that was overheating. I changed everything, thermostat, water pump, belt tensioner, radiator, all with no result. It would start out okay on a cold start but then I would come to a red light and the temp would creep up. Higher and higher until it neared the red zone. The heat would run cold. Most of the time, as soon as it was about to touch the red it would start to drop, the heat would blow hot again and all seemed okay but not for long. This would get worse and worse until the red hot light came on and I found myself on the side of the thruway. This problem is a blown head gasket. I had no other obvious signs, no white smoke from the exhaust, no oil in the antifreeze. I even changed the intake gaskets. Head gasket issues are common on the 3.4 liter engines.

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

You may two problems and one symptom. you may have a blend door problem that is not allowing air to circulate threw the heater core. also you may have a bad connection or weak coolant temp sensor showing you erratic readings and it may have nothing with the heat in the vehicle. you need to eliminate or separate the one of the the problems to diagnose your one symptom.

the first thing to try is turning the heater upto full heat(a/c off)if the temp guage goes down THEN CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT...(hot oil,if too hot, is thinner than the normal sae rating so the oil pressure will be lower.otherwise no real problem.

It sounds like your thermostat is sticking. You can tell when it sticks when your temp gauge spikes high and your blower won't blow heat and when it finally opens your temp gauge goes back down and you have heat again.

Help is HERE!
It looks like an Air lock scenario!
Park vehicle on level ground, when cold remove coolant filler cap, start engine and leave to idle, turn heater to hot blower on full. When at operating temp keep clear of coolant filler area and listen, hopefully gurgling then a boil over, wait and then top up with very warm water/coolant let settle it may boil over again whilst air is still in system.
Check for heat inside car, if hot and coolant settled replace cap but keep an eye on temp gauge for a while as air lock may still be further along cooling system.
Please press the Blue button if sorted!

Temp gauge isnt working properly

try replacing the temp sensor.......its between the first and second spark plug on the drivers side of the engine........should have a single wire going to it.........on second thought check the connection to it first if that's good then replace the sensor.
