Fuel gauge Stuck

Previously, Fuel Gauge would stick in place even when fuel was added, until driving on an incline, then would move & work correctly. Fuel pump recently went out, had mechanic replace it. Since replacing fuel pump, gauge has been stuck at 1/4 tank at all times. Inquired with mechanic that replaced fuel pump, he suggested it's probably the gauge itself. Tired of guessing... suggestions?

The most common way to find out is to test both components.
The sending unit in most vehicles grounds the gauge on the dash.
You would unplug the sending unit - pump harness at the tank and ground the sending unit wire. If the gauge climbs up to full the sending unit is at fault.
You could also measure resistance in the circuit in the tank when the tank is close to empty and after filling it up. The resistance should be different each time.

SOURCE: fuel gauge fluctuates on 1995 chevrolet tahoe

if you replaced the tank and all i assume you didnt change the fuel pump. if you dint then all thats wrong is that the float on the fuel pump is gas logged and will move more than if you had put in a new pump thus the fluctuation in the guage.

SOURCE: fuel gauge quit working. stuck on half a tank.

the fuel level sending unit has been incorporated into the fuel pump assembly.
the fuel pump is most likely your problem, these pumps dont like fuel additives so be careful.
most common problem with these fuel gauges is the sending unit, the sender contacts will errode over time fuel additives seem to speed the process.

replace the fuel pump assembly

hope this helps

SOURCE: The fuel gauge doesn't read right, makin' low fuel light flash

if the fuel pump is all in-tank; the sending unit built in to the fuel pump is most likely malfunctioning; if so, this will require removal and replacement of the entire fuel pump, sometimes expensive, others not so much

Pull the wire off fuel tank to the sender unit earth it out with ignition on.The fuel gauge should go to full slow even motion if it does replace unit in petrol tank.If it doest move you need new fuel gauge. Also before any of this i sumise you have checked fuse

My Peugeot 206 petrol gauge has stopped working it did this once before but then coup,e days later was ok again can I do anything to reset it or to get it working

Check the fuses first. There is a fuse box under the bonnet and another under the dashboard.
It might be worth checking the wires at the fuel tank end as well. This is an easy enough job for you to do yourself.
Open the rear door. Tilt the lower seat pad forward. This should reveal a plastic cover in the floor. It is a push fit so should lever out. This reveals the top of fuel pump/sender unit. Disconnect the wires from this. Inspect and clean them. Refit the wires and the cover plate. Fold down the seat and test the fuel gauge. It takes about 15 litres of fuel from empty for the gauge to react. If this doesn't work it could be the sender unit in the tank or the gauge display at fault.

My fuel gauge reads 3bars and by then the tank will be empty. Any ways of repairing the gauge ? Please assist

The fuel gauge may not be the issue. The issue may be the fuel level sensor. The sensor may be stuck or defective. If it is stuck, a good fuel line cleaner added to the fuel may loosen it.

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

2000 gmc sierra 1500 for last month check engine light stays on - previously, for several months, the fuel gauge would (still does some) not work when started up (whether warm or cold) until I put it back...

have vehicle scanned most auto stores offer this service for free the trouble code will give u a start point towards correcting that problem as to the gauge sounds like a different problem from check engine possible connected but doubt it check the wiring up under dash around back of gauge for loose or damaged wire[s] if wires good use a meter and test gauge itself for possible short

Fuel gauge bouncing on 2000 chevy tahoe where is fuel pump relay

I had previously replaced the failing fuel pump on my '98 K2500 when it went out entirely. I was ready to replace my 2000 K3500's fuel gauge as it was acting up.
When I started the engine, the gauge would bounce from the middle to way past full then back. It would also jump sporadically while driving on level ground.
I checked the electrical connections at the tank and made sure the frame ground strap located nearby was making good contact. Nothing changed until I removed the instrument panel and cleaned the connections on the back. The fuel gauge seems to be operating correctly now.
There are videos on YouTube that show how to remove the instrument cluster if in doubt. Mine dash has a pop-in plastic bezel followed by 4 screws to hold the cluster in place. It took about a half hour to inspect & clean the dash connection vs. $250 to replace the pump/sending unit combo. Hope this helps.

Fuel gauge seems to stick -- irratic readings

I've researched this problem thoroughly as all of my gauges on my '04 Bonneville GXP are producing erratic readings. The only two solutions are to replace the entire cluster which can cost in excess of $700 or replace the six "stepper" motors behind the cluster. Replacing them can only be done by deslodering the old ones and soldering in replacement ones.
