If it is using the old system, the most probable cause is the ignition coil. Try to grab hold of the ignition coil with your hand and feel it, when it is very hot then replace it but if it is normal then you can just crank the engine and confirm that there is a jump of electric current between the removed high tension lead from the distributor to ground. If there is a jump of current then the problem is with the distributor itself.

Quick timing chain test is generally when the chain fails the engine will spin faster when cranking. You will also have extremely low compression in the cylinders. If it is the chain, after replacement, if it idles very rough, chances are you have bent a few valves.

My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.

Engine turns over but wont start. You can hear thr fuel pump come on. Is it electrical? Could it be battery, fuse, or loose wire?

This sounds like the crank shaft sensor is bad. The sensor sends a signal to the computer about when to fire the coils for spark.

My subaru wont start and has no spark at the coils, what can i check. i changed the cranckshaft sensor still wont start.

I ran into this once when I changed a 2000 engine with a 2001 engine. The crankshaft gear for the timing belt was different. One had 2 ears for the crank angle sensor and one had 4. To check if this is the problem, pull all 4 sparkplugs, hook them to your plug wires, turn the engine over and see if you only have spark to 2 cylinders. If that's what you find then you will need to replace the crankshaft timing belt gear.
If that's not it, and you have spark to all 4 cyls., check your fuses. It could be a fuel pump fuse or ECM or an number of other fuses.
Good luck

I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 Turbo convertible, I have replaced the coil pack, the battery, starter, fuel pump, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs & more, the engine cranks like nobodys busines

did you check for voltage at the coil pack low tension input
this comes from the electronic ignition and the distributer dc setting on a multimeter

check inside the distributer that the little magnet is still in place on the rotor and that the sensor is outputing pulses as it turns over
{you can use a meter set to AC range for this ...}
pull a plug out and place its metal to ground check for actual sparks
if this is there then its fuel ...

I was driving down the road in my 2001 sonata, and it just died on me and can not get it started, all the fues are good in fues box, i founded out that it did not have spark. now would that be a coil...

Hi, it can be either of those or possibly a shorted condense or a bad crank sensor. First, I would check for battery voltage at the positive terminals of the coil when the key is on. If no voltage there, try disconnecting the condenser. If there is voltage, then check for AC voltage across the coil terminals while cranking the engine. If there is no AC voltage, the problem may be the crankshaft position sensor. The crankshaft position sensor is located next to the flywheel/torque converter. The computer is rarely the problem unless there was a short that caused undue current to flow.

Testing Crankshaft Position Sensor
2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3, on the crankshaft position side of the connector. Specification should be 0.486-0.594 kohm at 68 degrees F.
  3. If measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.

  1. Be sure that the CKPS and PCM connectors are connected.
  2. Engine ON and monitor the signal waveform of the sensor on the scan tool. Check whether the waveform is synchronized with the crankshaft position sensor or not.
  3. If the waveform signal is normal, substitute with a known good PCM and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected replace the PCM.
  4. If the waveform signal is not normal, substitute with a known good CMPS sensor and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected replace the CMPS.

2.5L Engines

Cranks but does not fire. put gas into intake still no start.

First off check and verify you have sufficient fuel pressure with a fuel gauge if the fuel pressure is good next verify you have spark remove one of the sparkplugs and instert a spark tester into the sparkplug wire and crank the engine around and observe that there is spark, if theres spark remove all spark plugs and perform a compression test the compression should be no lower then 180 PSI for that engine, next if theres no spark unplug the 4 wire connector from the coil pack and with an ohm meter ohm across the purple and yellow wire the resistance of the crankshaft position sensor should be between 700 and 900 OHMs if its not replace the crankshaft posistion sensor its located behind the engine in back of the starter, if you dont have fuel pressure check the fuel pump relay and fuse, if they both are okay then the pump is probably bad and you will have to drop the gas tank to access the pump.

Won't start new engine no spark

If it turns over fine, check the crankshaft position sensor, and wiring. I have had two no sparks after swapping engines, and it was the crankshaft position sensor.

Car wont start

It sounds like this could be a common problem - usually this is caused by the crank sensor going out/bad. The sensor is mounted to the timing cover on the front of the engine.
The crankshaft sensor provides both engine speed and crankshaft position signals to the ECM. The sensor is a variable reluctance device, consisting of a bobbin coil with a magnetic core. The resistance of the coil is approximately 1.35 kilo ohms . The steel teeth on the crankshaft timing ring are used as a rotor. As the rotor teeth pass by the crankshaft sensor, pulses are generated.

The rotor has 60 tooth positions set at intervals with three teeth missing. The gaps identify the TDC position of the 6 cylinders during one complete engine cycle (two crankshaft revolutions). The rotor thus provides both engine speed and crankshaft position information to the ECM. The missing pulses identify crankshaft position. Each tooth pulse after the missing pulse represents of crankshaft rotation. Thus the frequency of the toothed pulses are a measure of engine speed.
