Parking brake doesn't hold. I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.6L. The hand brake feels like i works but i get no stopping power from it at all. The rear drums, shoes and hardware have just been replaced. The cable has been attached for the brake. The auto adjust mechanisms are greased and working. Can this cable be adjusted from the interior of the vehicle? What else can I check?
On the accents what you need to do is to remove the plastic casing from around the parking brake mechanism. Towards the back on each side there is a screw that needs to come out. Then you will just need to wiggle the plastic casing out and around from the parking brake and set it aside with the screws. Once that is off on the inside there will be what looks like one long (gold colored) screw and at the bottom there will be a mini cable running off to each side. At the end of the tension adjuster is where you adjust it. Mine was very loose and I had to tighten it down quite a bit. It takes a 12 MM wrench. You will want to turn the wrench toward the passenger side to tighten it down. Hope this works for you.
The parking brake is adjusted at the brake lever inside the car 10 mm nuts at the base of lever
check that the hand brake quadrants have not seized
ok i asume that you have drum type rear brakes on this car if so then the quadrants are the internal lever assys on the mec in the brake drum check that all pivot points are free iff so then check the cables them selves iff all is ok then check that the brake linings are fitted correct

The parking brake does not engage. I adjusted the nut for the brake from under the console back almost all the way and foward until the hand brake was very hard to pull. Still no stopping (or slowing for that matter). I can hear the shoes pushing outward. I adjusted the nut so i can hear the shoes at the 4th click.
I adjusted the shoes until I felt a slight drag on the drum.
What and where are the hand brake quadrants?
I adjusted the tension under the center console however there is still very little stopping power. What else could be wrong?
how many clicks does the handle move before it starts to engage? the rule is by click four u should feel tension, also the park brake shoes are adjustable, did u properly adjust them?
