I syphoned gas from my chevorlet equinox and now it wont start. i can keep the charge on the battery for about an hour maybe a little more..but most of the time the car is completley dead and wont even turn over. i'm being told i need a new alternator and/or battery..
A GOOD BATTERY IS IMPORTANT, FIRST AND FOREMOST, but an ALTERNATOR is only good if it works ! so, replace your battery, start the engine, DOES A 'BAT' COME ON YOUR DASH ? OR SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT COME ON YOUR DASH, AND STAYS ON, ? IF ANY OF THRESE APPEAR, YES YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE YOUR ALTERNATOR ! YOUR COMMENT, most of the time the car is dead, tells me, REPLACE YOUR ALTERNATOR AS WELL, YES, DO IT ! ITS NO BULL, WHAT YOU WERE TOLD !
1st thing ,make sure you haven't taken out too much gas out. ck.fuel filter. loosen fuel line up on carb. or fuel injection ,whichever it has. If able to get to turn over see if fuel getting to engine. If not, fuel pump bad or fuel filter plugged. If able to get car started, disconnect batt. If it dies, alt.probably bad

Check the big red wire on the back of the alternator for power. The wire likes to get corroded in half inside the casing but is still held together BY the casing. you can even take a jumper cable from the positive side of the battery to the big/single wire on the back of the alternator. Now , you could have a bad ground also. take a voltmeter or test light and with the ground of the tester on the ground of the battery check for power on the case of the alternator. Another thing , does the alternator or charge light on the dash light up woth the key off? the alternator knows to "start-up" or "field-up" by the power it recieves through the bulb before the engine is started. once the engine starts the small brown wire on the alternator goes hot and shuts the light on the dash off cause it now has power on both legs of it. if the bulb blows then the alternator won't field-up. good luck. try changing the air filter ,i had a problem ,at ilde in drive my trailblazer would stall, changed the air filter now it's not stalling and got my power back ,there is a secondary air pump that i have to change ,
not sure were it is ? still not running perfect but it's running better .and my service light is on too.
i got it put on scope ,it's the pump .
not sure if this helps ,but i'm start to run in to problems too,i have a 2004 trailblazer.
i like to do fix things myself ,i hope i can.it's the cost if you know what i mean.

Might be something in your gas tank that gets stuck, I've heard of people putting whiffle balls in peoples gas tanks and that happens.
SOURCE: Battery light stays on
Many possibilities but the alternator is a good place to start, if its plug is loose, then the green relay inside the center console just to the left and slightly in front of the emergency brake will be clicking in connecting and disconnecting the battery( one loud click per time). It will need replacing or simply disconnecting works for the short budget.
SOURCE: battery wont cahrge up
First, disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
Second, disconnect alternator wires, one connector and one fuseable link attached to the stud.
Third, reconnect the battery cable to the battery.
Fourth, turn the key to the run position and check for voltage on all three wires, all three should light a test light.
Let me know what you find.
