My 1997 F250 has duel gas tanks. After a few days of being parked, I went to start it and it would not start. I switched to the rear tank and it started. I have a Haynes repair manual covering the 1997 F250 and it mentions nothing about duel tanks. I can hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the ignition key but only if the rear tank is selected. I am guessing it is an electrical problem but the repair manual has nothing about duel gas tanks at all - not even the electrical diagrams shows the information. I either need someone to tell me of a repair manual that actually covers the vehicle comprehensively (Haynes does not do that) or someone on here to explain where I should start troubleshooting the problem. All the fuses have been checked except some of the fusible links. Not sure where any relay switch is or even if there is one for switching tanks as the gimpy Haynes repair manual fails to say anything at all about duel gas-tanks. Thanks for any replies.

Check for battery voltage at the pump if ok replace pump. If no voltage check fuses and relay if ok check for broken wire or bad connection.

I would start by checking you switch for the tanks to make sure it is working right and if the front tanks fuel pump does not work after you check the switch I would get a 12 volt electrical test light and see if your getting power to the front fuel pump if your getting power to it I would say you have a bad pump . But some times the pump will run but the diaphragm gets weak in them.

1997 F250 with dual fuel tanks. Fuel from the rear tank siphons into the front tank. When I try using the front tank the engine cuts out under load. Also truck wont start using the front tank

If fuel injected. the tank selector valve switches both the suction line from the tank and the return line back to the tank. It sounds like you have a stuck or bad tank selector valve if the return is not being ported back to the rear tank.

I have a 1988 Ford F250 with the 460 engine and duel tanks it is factory fuel injected.....the front tank ran out of gas so I switched it to the rear tank( the same as many times before) the truck died and...

The fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch as well. The oil pressure switch runs power to the fuel pump when you first start it
When the oil pressure reaches operating range the relay takes over
They are both inexpensive so replace both of these parts to be safe and kill two birds with one stone. If one goes out the other will soon enough

My son ran my truck out of gas. Its a 1988 F250

first, is this a diesel? if it is there is a line or oring loose allowing it to **** air--diesels dont like leaks like that and there is a whole procedure for voiding the air from the lines on diesels. next could be the in tank pump and also does it have duel tanks? does the duel tank switch work? running out of fuel with in tank pumps can burn up the pump (the fuel itself provides lubrication and cooling for the pump, gas or diesel) and of course check the filter, running out and refilling could have disturbed trash in the tank

Front fuel tank will not work

You have duel tanks with a fuel pump in each tank. You also have a fuel pump on the frame rail after the "tank selector". This device only holds a fuel filter that protects the main fuel pump. When you select front or rear tank on the dash, you are selecting which in tank fuel pump will operate. You can check the in tank fuel pump by listening for it to "humm" when the key is turned on..The in tank pumps only feed the main pump and cannot run the engine on their own. Hope this helps

1996 ford f250 truck 4x4 5 speed 460 will not start.duel tanks-was running,tank one empty-switch to tank two-engine died-won't start.

Running tank one empty could have picked up **** from the bottom of the tank and clogged the in line filter that feeds the engine. It should be located under the truck on the left inner frame rail around the back of the cab area. Replace it don't try to clean it out it will just clog again. They are not that expensive from the locale parts house. DHR... EX Ford Line Mech
