This is the third time my left turn indicator has given me problems. It blinks like it's on crack. The bulb is so cheap and I hate to take it the Dealership to have them charge me an arm and a leg. How do I change this thing myself? Is it easy if I get one of the guys I work with to help me? Thanks.

most likely if you look under the 2 front seats and inspect the wires that come from the belt you'll find a broken wire. just repair broken wire and you'll be back in business.

You have to remove the airbag in the steering wheel. Unplug the battery. Place the steering wheel in the outer most lower position. Turn the wheel and in a certain position in the back using a mirrior you'll see holes. With a small screw driver you can unclip the airbag. Turn the wheel the other way to access the other clip. There are 2. Once removed unclip; the harness connector (yellow from the airbag and place it so the vw symbol of the airbag is facing upwards so if it does go off it won't fly upwards. **You should use an antistatic ground on yourself not to deploy the airbag. then use a 12mm triple square drive socket to remove the steering wheel. note the position as it can be placed in several positions. Behind the wheel is the steering angle sensor/ clockspring. DO NOT TURN the clockspring and make sure it stays in it's position when reinstalled or it will break. From there you can remove the trim on the column and access the switches. When reinstalling the airbag VW states to reinstall everything final, close all windows, put the key ON position get out of the car close the door, and only then put the battery back. This is because if the airbag does go off for any reason you will not be in the car when you put the key on. If it does go off the key will already be on and you will be safe. This is the procedure from VW and they state that if damge to other components are affected by key on and battery connected it is still safer than getting an airbag in your face. Just precautionnary. Note the airbag clips are hard to access to remove it. You have to place the flat end of the screw driver on the upper part of the clip and kin of press it downwards. Let me know, but if you are not comfortable or not experienced in airbags do not attempt this yourself.!!!

remove the trim on the trunk then there are three bolts 10 mm remove those then push up the third brake light and there you go the easiest light to change on a beetle. you will need a phillips to unscrew the trim on the trunk lid the bolts are in the pull down parts. then pull real hard to get the trim out of the clip holders

Try to reset the error codes in your ECM with an OBD2 reader. My tranny has shifting problems a couple times a year. I carry an OBD2 reader in my glove box. Good Luck
SOURCE: I have a 1999 VW Beetle and it will ot shift out
a code is stored. you will need to clear the code in order to get it to shift but as soon as the PCM sees the problem again it will have this same issue. You need to get this diagnosed before you end up far from home when this happens again.
Testimonial: "Thanks! This is the second time it has done this. The first time we had to change the plugs and wire then have the computer reset and the car ran great. I don't know if the fluid is low and if this would cause no shifting or not, I am taking the car to a tranny guy in the morning to see if the fluid it good or not.. I hate how they done the beetle's...Thanks again"
