To find out if it is off its track you can remove the cover between the rearview and the sunroof that is the motor/drive assembly. there is a slotted pin in this assemply that you turn with a screwdriver to move the sunroof manually if it wont move manually then you have a bigger issue. sometimes thie drive assembly screws get loose, i believe there are two screws that hold it up,when those are loose you will get a grinding sound when the gears skip. good luck.

SOURCE: 1992 Volvo 940 Gl Sunroof Problem

It is a rather involved procedure requiring the removal of the headliner and all the related trim work of the interior of your car. If you have never done it before it is quite likely to cost less to take it to a dealership for repair.

Sounds like the switch or motor. Most cars have a hidden manual crank for the sunroof. Check your owners manual.

How do you reset sunroof in a 2001 Monte Carlo with 3400 model I

check fuse and relay if good than possible motor ot track problem their should be a mechanical bypass that will let you close it if stuck open the following information is courtesy of monte carlo forum
To check the condition of your original sunroof guides:
  1. Gl*** in closed position.
  2. Locate & remove 3 torx bolts on each side of sunroof glass. Lift glass out of sunroof opening & set aside in a safe place.
  3. Locate "J" shaped cover plate at front of sunroof track assembly. Remove 2 torx bolts from each cover plate.
  4. Lift up bracket to remove.
  5. Inspect the plastic guides on each side. The sunroof cables attach to guides on front outer corner. Inspect this area closely for damage.
  6. Do not operate the sunroof with the J plates removed.
Troubleshooting:
If the sunroof guides are not broken & the glass is a uniform height along the rear edge your problem may be a stripped gear inside the motor. The motor has a manual override:
  1. Get access to the motor by removing the map light/switch console or lowering the front of the headliner.
  2. Insert a large standard screwdriver into the nylon bushing at the center of the motor hub. Push up & turn the screwdriver to manually move the sunroof glass. If the unit will fully open & close manually, you most likely only need a replacement motor.

If your sunroof is stuck in the open position follow these steps to get it closed:
  1. Remove the glass.
  2. Try to close the unit without the glass. Many times one side will still be operational and close correctly.
  3. Try to slide the inoperable lift arm forward. If it moves, slide it forward until it stops.
  4. You now need to slide the original plastic guide forward to lower the arm to the closed position. Using a standard screwdriver, push it forward. The lift arm should begin to lower.
  5. If the lift arm will still not fully lower, remove the J plate as explained above, sometimes the sunroof cable will need to be lifted up to allow the guide to fully slide forward.
  6. Reinstall glass.

Sunroof wont close, is there anyway to do manually

If you remove the plastic cover in front of the sunroof, you will see the motor. There is a plastic slot to stick a screwdriver into. Push the screwdriver into the slot until you hear a release pin click then turn the screwdriver clockwise. The sunroof should close.

Have '01 v70. Sunroof opened all the way, now won't close. I've pulled the light assembly/cover to get a look at it. The black plastic electronic box seems to have some sort of sensing ability to it that...

there should be a slot you can put a flat head screwdriver in to turn the motor round and close the roof. the motor assembly there is a magnet inside and a reader to tell the motor when to stop or move. the sensor can fail and ope till it cannot move any more it also as a water trigger. this in the event that the vehicle is under water the sunroof opens so you can get out. this feature can go wrong a well.

Sunroof stuck in the open position. can;t close.

The problem is probably the 'flap' of metal that's popped up, just above the where the handle is.
The runners/rails have undoubtedly corroded, and now there isn't anything to pull it down.
Luckily, as a 'Get the roof shut cos it's p*^%g
down' solution,,.
You can just hold your finger on the flap, to hold it down, in between the sunroof, and hole as you shut it.
Just remember to remove your finger Before you finish closing the sunroof.
Happy motoring.

Sun roof will open but not close

there is a manual way to close it. between the rearview mirror and the sunroof there is a plastic box remove the two screws holding this on and remove. then with a flat tip screwdriver depress the white plastic clutchpinin the center of the motor screw.(this should be towards the rear of the area).turn this white plastic pin to open or close your sun roof. i hope this helps.
