Ford freestar back hatch lock won't unlock

I have a 2004 Freestar van. Naturally we use the unlock button on the driver's or passenger's door to unlock the rear hatch, which has no mechanical lock override of its own. The unlock button stopped tripping the back door lock, slowly at first and now it never works. Helpless to open the back hatch. But all four other locks respond fine (from either door front). I have removed the inner hatch door panels and have a good view of the entire locking assembly. But, does anyone know what the most likely failed part is?

SOURCE: My 2004 Freestar rear door is stuck in the closed

there is a rod that connects the solenoid to the lock assy. from inside the van you can move it with your hand or pliers and then open the hatch. you will need to clean up the lock because ther will be corrosion and then use a white grease to lube the whole thing. operate by hand a few times before you close it up. there is an access port by the lock inside the door so you dont need to take the whole panel off.

Electric latch on the rear Hatch door will not unlock

I guess ford was trying to make a couple more bucks by not putting key locks on all doors. Anyway, if you crawl inside and pop the small cover(about 2"x2") off the inside of the hatch where the latch is located you can reach in with a screwdriver and manually move control arms. The lever on the back/far side of assembly is in the locked position, you need to move to the opposite side left or right of it's current position, this will unlock the latch and should allow you to open the door. You mave have to pop acutor arm loose to move it. My problem ended up being the outside cover {license plate frame)seal had been damaged by a ford mechanic, that or it was defective. Water got in and damaged the the lock acuator. Had to replace entire assembly as ford does'nt offer just the acuator. Sealed the outside cover with clear silione.

Pcm ford freestar protection

The PCM is the main computer on most Fords

It does have powertrain functions, such as your
transmission

There is no fixing a PCM,they are cleaned ,tested & repaired,
in a factory, in the aftermarket parts supply chain

There is no changing a transmission

You either remove the trans & rebuild it or
you install a factory reman

You never,never--- install a used salvage yard trans

PCM's hardly ever fail. There is only about a 3%
chance of that.

Given your vehicles transaxle history,I would say it
is shot & needs to come out & do as I mentioned above

The freestar & whatever it was called before, has the worst
transaxle failure rate bar none in the industry

May want to get away from the all to popular van type vehicles

All the vans for the last 30 years fail early & many times

Transaxles in general are not good at all, even changing the
fluids often, unfortunately rear drive is almost gone, that is the
way to go,but who wants a big heavy suv

Water won't be an issue for the PCM

If & I don't know you have an asian trans in there with a
module on the trans ,then water may be a problem

I would hope you mechanic is at a trans shop,as anywhere
else I don't think your in the correct place to diagnose the issues

If you think about your question, you want someone to tell your
professional mechanic, how to do their job ,as your not going
to work on it yourself.

We only can offer so much, mostly guesses,as you need
any product to road test & do some testing

Where is fuel filter for 2004 freestar?

Inside the frame rail, about 3/4 of the way back, about the size of a coke can. May have a guard that hides it.
It is underneath the van on the driver's side near the rear edge of the driver's door. Follow the fuel line coming out of the gas tank to it.
