The car was in park and turned off. When started I moved from park into reverse to back out of parking space. When I took my foot off of the brake, the car moved forward. The car was clearly in reverse. I again put the car in park and moved it back into reverse and this time it went backward. What could cause this problem?

Sounds like the parking brake is seized on.
Hardest part is geting the rear drums off to do the repair.

These are common for stripping the splines in the torque converter for the pump shaft. If it did this when you check the fluid with the engine running it will read overfull. To fix it you would have to remove the transmission and replace the torque converter.

Have you checked your alternator? Watch the battery guage and see where it is when the car is running. If it's below the 1/2 way mark, you may not be getting enough voltage to keep the battery charged. Otherwise there may be a loose battery cable either at the battery or at the engine. Check the ground wire at the engine block and make sure the positive is tight at the starter. There is also an alternator fuse; check the owners manual for the location.
