1992 bonneville 3800 V6 speedometer/transmission problem

At acceleration speedometer will read zero and transmission hesitates to switch gears and now within the last day its doing alot of sputtering and what sounds like backfire when increasing the speed. I've heard that it could be the speed sensor, if im correct, where is it located, is an engine/transmission diagram available for that year

Speedometer cluster or sensor. The sensor can be checked on car with a scan tool. This may eliminate that.

Haynes manual should be easy to find for it. Diagrams are about 1/3 of the back of them.

could be a short in the vehicle speed sensor or a faulty cluster, the speed sensor on the transmission is the first thing to check and the cheapest.

It won't change gears and speedometer is jerky

I had the same problem with my 2002 Grand Caravan. It turned out to be a broken wire attached to the speed sensor on the transmission housing. Try that first!

Honestly, it sounds like your transmission is starting to go bad, With the cars I have had that hesitate to switch gears, the transmission went out soon afterwards. Have you made sure to check the fluid levels?

Also, check the level and color of the transmission fluid. It should be red/pink in color without much discoloration in it. And the level should be at the designated line on the dipstick.
