Power steering hard

I have Nissan Altima 2005 and it has 78k miles. Car steering is too hard to make left/right turns. Steering is too too hard in the morning. PS Fulid is good and I don't see any fluid leaks. I showed this problem to Sears Auto, they told it might be Rack or PS Pump problem but they didn't figure it out exactly. Please suggest me how can I find out PS Pump problem or Rack&Pinion prob.

Hey Kumar,
Does the steering get easier when it gets hot? If it get easier when hot, its the rack and pinion gear. The valve body (actually a teflon composition ring(s) o-rings/valve bore housing are getting worn to the point where they are not controlling the fluid flow when its cold,, when the rack and pinion gets hot, the valve bore expands and "corrects" the clearance which in turn, controls the fluid flow. The valve body bore in the rack and pinion housing is worn where the teflon rings ride against the bore.
This is nothing that can be fixed except by replacing the entire rack and pinion gear. Drain ALL the power steering fluid from the pump also and fill with fresh new fluid.

Hi:
Sometimes air gets into the power steering system, and can cause noises.

often, the technician that installed the hose, could ensure all the air is out, by having the car up off the ground, and turning the steering full left and full right, while bleeding the system, as well as making sure that it has 100% fresh fluid too.

Welcome to Fixya

If the car is power steering then you should not be worrying in steering the wheel. It will became stiff if the rack & pinion is alreadt worn out. You will notice also that when you drive through rought road you ill be hearing grinding noise. That is the sign that you need to replace the rack and pinion assembly. what reservoire are you asking here? is that the radiator reservoire or power steering. If its with the power steering then you need to check all connection if everything is tight. check also the cap if it is tight when you close it. Foaming usually builds up if there is trapped air inside. When the pump is running, any air trapped in the pump or lines is compressed, and gets entrapped in the fluid. When an air bubble hits the pump, the pump will cavitate, and thoroughly mix the air into the fluid, entraining the air into the fluid. When the pump stops turning, the entrained air in the rack and lines expands, pushing fluid out the of the reservoir.

Thank you for using Fixya!

you may need the lower steering shaft. pretty common issue with those. they are starting to pop up more and more now that those cars are getting older (2002 - 2006) models. there is a u-jiont built into the lower steering shaft. those get tight and cause hard steering. have it checked. its the piece that connects to the steering rack and the upper steering column.

2008 Nissan Altima. I changed the high pressure hose and now my power steering pump doesn't even whine and is hard to steer. What's the problem?

THREE questions edited to join into One. 2 Duplicates DELETED.
Edited to add FULL 'year make model'.
Question moved to correct category.

Hoses should be changed in pairs, because if one leaks, the other will leak not too long afterwards. You may have air in the system, or the pump may have failed. When you are bleeding the system, you have to have the car jacked up at the front and turn slowly full lock left, and full lock right.

Mechanic wants to change my power steering fluid because it is burned. 45k miles on my altima hybrid. also wants to clean my fuel injectors with an i v system?

Power steering flush can't hurt. In fact flushing the power steering systems on some vehicles has solved power steering issues. Power steering fluid is one of the few fluids that is not filtered. Yet it is subject to contamination, heat cycles, shearing, and compression just like many of the other fluids in your car.

Unless there is a problem with the fuel injection system a service is not needed.

I have a 2007 Nissan Altima. When turning right or left it makes a whinning sound and my steering wheel vibrates a bit as I turn. It will also whine when I have it in park. I'll let it warm up a bit and...

Check the belt tension before you do anything. Most of the time, this is the issue. Second could be just a badly worn belt. Simple and lest expensive things to start with.

2003 Nissian Altima the steering wheel is hard to turn and has no automtic return

Either your rack and pinion has gone out or your power steering pump is bad, or out of fluid.
As you stand in front of you car with the hood open, look down and to the left. You are looking for the pwer steering pump resevior. It will have 2 hoses coming out of it and a cap that has a picture of a steering wheel.
Open that and you can check the fluid.
Please let me know what you find.
