The security, antitheft, or passlock light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterperates this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.

I have a 2002 ford Mustang in which I just changed the alternator and battery and now it will start for a second and shut right off. The secerity lite is on.

Sometimes the security system goes into a weird safe mode after replacing the battery. There's two things that have worked for me in the past. One is turning the key to the on position without starting the vehicle and leaving it like that for 15 minutes, then start the car. The second was removing the negative battery terminal, turn the key to the on position, then replace the battery terminal.

My 1996 buick riviera will not turn over for 4 days now secerity light goes on and off

The security light is the reason that the starter is not turning over. The security light indicates a problem in the antitheft system. When this is triggered, the antitheft system turns the starter off to prevent the car from being stolen. The hard part is finding out which part is causing the antitheft to fail. Go to this link for info on how this system works along with some tricks to try, and ways to bypass this system entirely.
