It originally blew the ignition fuse months ago. Replaced it and its been starting just fine. Then it blew again and continued to blow the next one. Took the starter to test it, needed new one. Replaced it and when we tried hooking the battery back up, it tried to start. There was no ignition fuse in, no key on, so we pulled the relay thinking it might keep it from starting, no such luck. we wound up pulling 4 fuses ( I think) and the starter relay and it still tried to start! What should we try next?

I don't think the key and tumbler is your problem at all. The switch is down on your steering column. It's either loose and sliding around when the rod pulls, or it's wrecked. They can cause all kinds of problems. Just drop your steering column and take a look.

it sounds like your ignition switch could be bad, it is mounted on the steering column under the dash, it is the actual switch that activates the ignition and starter when you turn your key. if it is going bad it will give the same symptoms that you have described.

you are on a search and destroy mission, i recommend you buy a manual with wiring diagram, at least it will tell you what is hooked on that circuit, thenits a matter of testing wiring, i suspect you have a short somewhere
Testimonial: "Well, thanks for the opinion, even though I read it after fixing my problem. It was indeed a short, as the cover for the wiring harness was missing, and apparently a wire had rubbed bare and was shorting against the valve cover. I couldn't actually see the bad spot, but by carefully moving it I isolated the spot and taped it up really good and put a new cover in place. Thanks for the quick reply though!"

Are you positive your being given the correct starter? Work the control circuit without the starter hooked up until you have no voltage drops that could blow a fuse later with the starter in the control circuit to solenoid
