My 1996 Dodge Dakota wouldn't start last week. Carguest told me the battery was shot. I bought a new battery on Friday, truck started and ran fine Friday and Saturday. Sunday I drove it to church and didn't notice the brake lights stayed on. After church, about 1 1/2, hours the truck wouldn't start without a jump. Battery still had a little juice as brake lights were still on. Would the brake lights drain the new battery that fast or do I have another problem like the alternator?
SOURCE: Think I an have an electrical problem
there is a wire connected to the battery and alternator. the connection is bad have someone fix it. this happened to me too on the same car. gl :)

Disconnect battery from vehicle overnight to check for internal battery drain.......just take one of the cables off.
If the battery is still up and starting the vehicle after being disconnected after a day or two......the drain IS in the vehicle and will have to be checked again.
Do it yourself.
Buy a cheap 12 volt test light.
Place it between the cable you removed before.
One end on the battery post and the other on the cable end.
Now....with the key off......
If the light glows brightly....you have TOO MUCH drain.
We want a dim glowing light.
The dim light is just the memory circuits in the electronics and OK.
With the doors closed....take out one fuse at a time until the light glows dim.......the fuse that dims the light is the problem circuit.
If no fuse dims the light...remove relays one at a time.
Remember....some fuses and relays could be in the engine compartment and under the dash.
If no relay dims the light disconnect ALL alternator wires.
Remember....anything that uses power will make the light glow ....keep those doors closed (we do not want interior light drain affecting the test ) and if you have a under hood light check it first by removing the bulb.
We do not want false readings.

The fact that a jump made the thing work really rules out starter and solenoid. If you got a clicking but no start, then a jump fixed the problem, there are really only 2 possible causes. Since the first is a dead battery and you have said the battery was fine, then it has to be the second, which is a poor connection between one of the leads and the battery. Sometimes, oxidisation builds up under the connector and this will cause the connection to fail although it looks good. Clamping jump leads to the connector probably disturbed it and made the connection good again. Remove each cable clamp, clean battery connector and the clamp on the cable thoroughly with emery cloth and reconnect, As you're doing this, also check that the connections that hold the cable into the clamp are good and tight and have no corrosion.
REMEMBER that if you disconnect your battery, you may loose the security code to your radio/CD. An easy way to avoid this is jump onto the cable connectors from another battery (Like you were jump starting it) so that the power to the radio is maintained during the procedure.

Have the battery fully charged for 2-4 hours and then start the truck, once it starts check the altinator output and reply.
Either its a bad new battery or tour altenator isn't charging it. Jumpstart it.
