1992 Volvo would not start using the ignition switch

Hello,

I own a 1992 240 Volvo the car runs perfectly but just this week I'm unable to start the car using the ignition switch when the key is turned on, all other electronic stuff works fine. But the engine would not turn over to start. the only way i can get the engine started is to bridge the starting motor terminals once it starts it runs perfectly the ignition key is used to turn it off but it would not start it up on it's own using the key.

I recently installed a new ignition switch and it is still not starting with the key.

I await for your reply

Thank you,

Lee

Started car left it running for a few minutes - it stopped and will not start again - Help!!

The problem has to be either in the fuel delivery system or ignition system respectively. U need to trouble shoot those two areas to locate source of problem. For example, if your fuel pump is not running no way your engine gets gas and runs. If not running, why? Is the motor bogus or is it not getting power? Coil(s)?, fuses, filters, switches in line, etc.

Basically you have to be a good thorough detective and leave no stones un turned.

Gas milage has droped from 17 mpg down to 6 mpg inless than two weeks time, engine sounds like it is missing

Might want to pull the computer codes to see which sensor or switch
is malfunctioning. The computer is in limp in mode to keep it running and get you home. The codes should point you in the right direction.

Volvo 240se

On older types 240 there was some kind of antitheft system connected with the steering lock. Try to route a lead from the battery to the ignition coil and se if it starts.
I drove a 240 with a separate ignition switch all through high school.

How do i replace air flow meter on 1992 volvo 240 wagon. It stalls at low speed, intermittently.

It is a can shaped air flow sensro, in the plastic intake hose. To replace it all you have to do is pull the electrical connector, unscrew the clamps on the line on both sides, and switch out the sensor. Make sure you have the correct sensor, there were 3 different types used.

Check engine light - 240 enfgine running rich

It could be a number of things but must be diagnosed via computer code check. If you are unable to do so yourself, find a reputable Volvo mechanic. It could be the air mass meter, a bad O2 sensor or something related. Mine turned out not to be the air meter but a bad ground wire going to it. Didn't find out until $400.00 later.

Volvo 89 dl 240 headlights

If the dash lights go on when you turn the key to the on position then turn it to the start position the dash lights should go off. If this does not happen, your ignition switch may be bad.

Volvo 240 has no spark

Try a new engine rpm speed sensor. It is located at the back-top of engine block where it mates to trans. You will need to remove a single bolt (10mm socket or wrench). You may have to wiggle the sensor to lift it out. Another symtom you may experience, is when you are cranking the car to start, it will buck and act like it is out of time. Another possible component is the ignition power stage/amplifier.
