It has a new battery and a new starter. I can hear the fuel pump running.
Well you know one thing, your air, spark, and fuel mixture isnt right at first start up. Sounds like a fuel pressure problem. Your fuel pump may not be hold pressure or fuel regulator on the fuel rail may need to be replaced. Regulators are pressure activated and use springs to regulate gas flow like when you start your car drive and idle. Also check for leaks or cracks in fuel lines as they can cause the same effect
Testimonial: "The problem turned out to be a crack in the distributor cap. After replacing the distributor cap and rotor button the problem is resolved. Thanks to everyone for your input. God Bless!!!"

The pump is in the tank. Empty the tank, disconnect the filler and vent tubes, and remove the straps that hold it under the car. Take the strap bolts off the rear end and the front should just slide out. Have a jack ready to help lower and roll out of the way.

Three things.
First, you need to check the MAF sensor for contamination.
Second, check fuel pressure, if you dont have a gauge, autozone and Advance have them on their tool loaner program.
Should see 35-40 psi with key on engine off, cycle key a few times, if it takes a while to build up, replace filter and retest.
Third, possible convertor blockage, easiest check is to remove the 02 sensor and try to start with the hole open, if it runs, then that is it, specs allow for 2-3 lbs of back pressure max. That means if you can hear pressure escaping, it is a problem area.
Change your fuel filter. **** at the bottom of your gas tank probably clogged it.

the check the fuel pressure at the engine, check the idle speed sensor and map sensor.

check the ignition fuse, fuseable link and starter relay

Your problem may be one of the following:
First check or just replace the fuel filter. Usually located under the car in front of the rear axle, drivers side.
Next, the fuel pump may be worn out. Usually they get loud or stop working (running).
Next, check the fuel pressure regulator. Usually located on the front fuel rail, drivers side.
Is the vacuum line attached? Not leaking or rotted?
Also, do you smell a strong fuel odor when it won't start? May be one or more stuck-open injectors, or the coil pack is bad.
Checking these in the order listed will more than likely fix your problem.
The clicking noise indicates the battery can no longer run the starter, which also means the fuel pump won't run either.
It could be a fuel issue. How old is the fuel filter? Can you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on? Try turning the key to ON without trying to start engine three times waiting for the pump to stop running each time. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, Its a form of Vapor lock caused by the extreme heat we have had lately, and a weak fuel pump.
If none of this works, try a new fuel filter first. From there have someone check the fuel pressure regulator and then the pump. If you are in need of a new pump, take my word for it and spend the money to get one from a Dealer, and not from your favorite parts store. Most parts store parts are made in China and they are JUNK.
