You didn't mention what engine you have. The location I am showing you in the picture below (Red arrow/relay 1) is the location for the 1.7 & 1.8 liter engine. If you have the turbo or the DSL engine, the location is different. Hope this helps....

SOURCE: NO FUEL GOING TO ENGINE, BUT ENGINE WANTS TO TURN OVER

Hi

Have you flushed out all of the old unleaded fuel from the system and fitted a new fuel filter? Unleaded fuel only lasts for a very short while before going off. You need to flush out the tank and the fuel lines and then put fresh fuel in the tank and fit a new fuel filter or you could be leading yourself on a wild goose chase.

Do you hear the fuel pump running for a second or two when you switch on the ignition? If not then you need to check the fuel pump positive terminal for battery voltage with a volt meter whilst someone switches on the ignition for you, and check the fuel pump negative terminal to ensure it is properly earthed.

If you have a live and an earth at the pump but the pump still isn't running then you need to renew the fuel pump.

If these suggestions don't solve your problem then I'll need to know what size engine is in the car before I advise you further.

Regards

Geordie

SOURCE: 1988 vw Jetta power to fuel injector

If the fuel pump has power it may be a bad ground clean the plugs contact with electric contact cleaner it comes in a spray can. spray the inside of the plug and plug it on several times to rub off any corrosion on the plug and its contacts. By the way if the pump has power to it the relay is working when you turn the key one you can hear the fuel pump relay click.

SOURCE: I have a VW diesel Rabbit pick-up,ran motor out of

I have run my VW diesels out of fuel and there are several ways that you can fix this.

1) fill the fuel tank and crank the engine until it starts. Do not crank for more than 20 seconds or so to prevent damage to the starter. You may need to run the glow plugs and crank the engine again if it does not start the first time.

2) pull start the car. Put the car in second gear and have someone tow you. Let out the clutch and turn on the key so that the glow plugs glow. This is also a good way to start your vehicle if it is cold out.

3)Fill the fuel filter with fuel (there is a screw on the top that can be removed and you can fill the fuel filter with fuel to help it start faster.

The 1.5 and 1.6 diesels are not very hard to get going after you run out of fuel.

2006 golf starts but soon rpm drops then stalls. will start again but soon stalls

I had a 78 rabbit did the same thing. It was the fuel pump relay. The connector was under size and burnt up. When you star the car on the old Rabbit the pump runs off the ignition switch. Once it starts the relay needs a pulse from the distributor to let it know that the car is running and keep the pump running after it starts. If not the relay times out and pump stops pumping gas. Its for safety so if in a accident and the engine stops the pump wont pour out gas

The rotor bearings are bad in the fuel pump. Pull the gas tank and replace the pump before it fails, it will likely be in the near future or when the weather turns cold..

1984 RABBIT GTI FUEL PUMP KICKS ON AND OFF

You had a missing relay before? To operate the pump you'd jump the perpendicular connections. As for the relay running briefly, that sounds like it could be a worn out ignition switch.
