Hi, My thoughts exactly ( fuel leak). Is this a deisel or gas engine?
In both cases be very careful with lights or cigarettes.
You can smell it when you get out of car in a garage or stall.

your turbo seal has gone i recommend repair asap as a customer i had last week blew a engine because of this exact problem. the oil seal leak is letting oil into your intake and it is being burnt off when your car is reeving its self.

Hi a1999 E 320 CDI started with the help of a push of the fuel pedal for the first time after replacing fuel and oil filter and wouldn't start for the next few times. And I discovered the new fuel filter didn't fit properly so I put back the previous one BUT still it won't start. Thank u and much appreciated if any quick response
