1997 pontiac sunfire 2.4L.dual overhead cam 4cyEngine started making knocking noise while driving on highway. The hotter the motor got , the louder the knock got and the less the motor continued to run. When the motor is cool it starts right up but still has the knocking sound. The oil and antifreeze are clean and are not milky looking.

Sound like low oil pressure.check engine oil level when engine cool.oil level should be at the full mark on oil dip stick.if oil level okay replace oil filter and oil.if engine still knocks check oil pressure.make sure engine not over heating.because engine run too hot will also knock before locking up.

SOURCE: knock in engine

Will831,
Check your timing belt too, it might be loose already. My car had the same problem and thougt that engine was going bad on me. Tried also the additives but didn't help. So I did a litle invistagation to figure out where the knoking sound is comming from. It sounded near where the belts are. Opened the cover and voela! found the belt was loose - took it out - upon invistegation, belt was starting to wear out out - one of the teeth was starting to peel off. Replaced it, retightend it and replaced the belt tensioner too - so far it's been 4month now and still no knocking problem.
Hope this helps..

SOURCE: 4.3 vortec engine , engine noise, knocking or

The knocking or ticking is going to determine if it is in the top end, lifters, push-rod or rocker arm issue or the bottom end that would include pistons or bearings.
If it is a ticking noise, it will more than likely be a valve train issue.
If a knocking noise, piston or crankshaft related problem.

Attached is a web site that you can listen to a piston slap which is a known issue for your 4.3.
Listen to the noise and see if it sounds similar to your problem. A piston slap will generally sound as though it is coming from the central area of the engine.
Listen to the recording and let me know.

I was driving down the highway in my 2003 pontiac sunfire and it was making a knocking noise and it shut off and know it want start

If it was a loud hammering knocking kind of noise and it just stopped dead in its tracks, you most likely threw a connecting rod. Try turning the crankshaft by hand (with the appropriate size socket and bar on the crankshaft nut) if you can't budge it, the engine is probably toast.

Ok. Last night my car started making a knocking noise. Its not loud and only happens when im in idle. Also it seems to come from the bottom of the engine. Help?

if it gets louder and faster as the engine speed increases then a piston is knocking...if it is just at idle like you said then it could be a bad oil pump if oil light is on at idle or it could be the connecting rod knocking on the crankshaft because it is loose.

Front wheel bearings bad

if it gets louder when you turn left then the right front wheel bearing is bad and vice versa it gets louder when the weight shifts to that wheel

Does it have a timing chain or a timing belt

Hello.
In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines.
A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine.
Both use a timing chain setup.
Hope this helps you along.
Best of the season to you.

Need to replace motor and transmission in a 97 Pontiac Grand AM G

Changing from a 1992 to a 1997 < WILL NOT Be EASY , As you must HAVE the ENTIRE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS , And ALSO the ECM for the older Set up. In the "5" YEARS there Were MANY CHANGES to the ENGINE Components= SENSORS and ACTUATERS .
its just a BETTER IDEA to Stay Whitin a year or 2 when Swaping ENGINES. SIZE OF SENSORS ETC. MAKES IT DIFICULT

Flashing oil light/ loss of power

Check your converter on your exhaust when it's running and see if the noise of rattling is coming from there. If it is you have a plugged converter,it's broken up and in piece's which will make noise and no power especially when calling for power.Be sure to let exhaust cool before repair is done.If the engine is making the noise like a knocking sound you should bring it to have it checked.Hope this help's.
