Just because you replace hose, this should not have overheated engine. You need new automatic tensioner pulley.

Because you overheat, you need to have a pressure test done, you could have warped the heads.

Replace tensioner, get pressure test, make sure coolant level is right, check to make sure fan's come on when engine reaches temp after thermostat opens. Now after all test check ok, belt not slipping, see if you still lose power.

I over heated and then saw the hole in hose and replaced it started engine and drove and heard something shaking open hud and see the tension pully shacking it wasnt doing that before

Thank you for reply, much appreciate. A lose belt can cause power loss so fix tension, and make sure you get pressure test, overheating these engines, are known to warp heads. s

what would mess up the pully like that it just happen like that NUTS the belt is old

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2013

Just normal wear can kill the bearing on the ideler pulley. This and the tension arm are the fist things to be replaced after a few years. Usually the tension arm loses tension and causes the belt to get slack, this in turn puts different stress on the idler causing extra wear.

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2013

When you have the belt off, check all pulleys, it can also be a bad one, the power steering pump could have a bad bearing, spin all of them, every pulley, feel for play in them, any drag on them, if none of them have any play and spin freely,, it was just the bearing in the idler or the tension arm that went bad.

odiebugs thank you very much the engine has been running hot maybe thats the reason for that lose belt I was wondering .But maybe the over heating cooked the pump to .odiebugs thank you very much

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2013

Thank you. Have the fans checked, water pump, make sure your coolant is a 50/50 mix and not diluted one way or the other. You don't want this engine overheating, they are know for head warping, and your looking at around 2 thousand to have the heads planed and put back w/new head gasket.

    wet (1) 115 (2) 125 (3) 150 (4) 120 doing your math what will all this tell you???

  • Anonymous Apr 18, 2013

Rich, repost this as a new question, not many will see this old question. 80 is low , but not below 15 percent of the rest, the rise you get indicate worn rings from oil test. There all above 100, so I assume the engine is sound. I think you really need a pressure test and tell them about this, could be just bad head/gasket.

SOURCE: Heat blows cold when car is idling

You have an air pocket in the cooling system. To bled it out you will have to park vehicle on an incline or jack up the front end untill the radiator cap is higher than the heater core. The remove radiator cap and run engine until warm then hold rpm to about 1200 rpm's and top off coolant level until you have no more bubbles.

SOURCE: putting drive belt back on

Hi there Rabbigrape,

Once you you know how, getting a serpentine belt on is easy. And doesn't require a prybar.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It's one of the smaller ones and is mounted on a spring loaded arm. It's job, as the name suggests, is to keep the belt tight. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're all set
The socket size may vary, but slow force is the trick.

SOURCE: Heater hose connecter pulls out of intake manifold

Try cleaning the tube and manifold where they connect (use small wire brush or?). I would try using JB Weld @ the fitting before i would even consider a new intake. Water pressure in the cooling system shouldn't be much over 15-18 lbs. so doing this quick fix should solve the problem.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Unfortunately does sound like your alternator and the pulsing is most common to overcharging if you can get a multimeter put it on to dc volts 20volt range connect to the battery and with the engine running should read 13.6 volts to max 14.2 volts get someone to bring revs up on car to around 2500 revs and charge rate should still be inside these readings if either side of these you have a charging problem ,if the drive belt is visible see if you can see it bouncing if not quick trip to repair shop for diagnosis will be able to tell in couple of minutes and shouldn't be charged for diagnosis

How do I change a serpentine belt on a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Start by drawing a diagram of the pulleys, and how the belt runs around them.(GM has sticker under the hood with a diagram, but I don't think anyone else does this). You need to find the tensioner, and use something to relieve the belt tension to allow belt removal.(some engines, especially on roomy rear wheel drive cars, may allow you to use an ordinary ratchet or a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner).

Belt tensioner is -placed were on a mercury topez 1988. i need to find it so ican put a new one one the car. i can not find it any were.

the front of hte engine faces the passenger side fender. The tensioner is an automatic tensioner. You put a 1/2 socket in the square hole to rotate it to relieve tension and take the belt off.

here's escort, tempo similar

Car is running hot occasionally and the serpentine

Well there's only part that has to do with the cooling system and serp belt - the water pump!! Maybe it's starting to seize or has too much play. Either way, when you change the water pump, replace the thermostat and flush the system very thoroughly, those 98-99's are notorious for rust build up. Make sure to pull the heater hoses off and flush the heater core too. After all said is done, purge the coolant and make sure there is heat from the blower. If not you're going to have to replace the heater core because that gets clogged sometimes when flushing.

Describe your 2005 Chevrolet Optra Problem How to change serpentine belt tensioner?

Remove the air filter housing and air hose. Set aside
Pull the 15mm bolt on the tensioner counterclockwise (towards front of car) and hold it there to loosen tension, and remove the serpentine belt.
With your 15mm wrench, unbolt the belt tensioner and remove.
Replace with new tensioner
Put serpentine belt back on.
Very easy! Be careful when releasing tension, becase if you let go of the wrench it will fly back and could hurt you.
