Steering Proble, My 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500LD makes a grinding noise. It only makes the noise when you turn the wheel left or right, and especially at low speeds.

It sounds like you may have a bearing or CV joint going out. Your vehicle will need to be jacked up and inspected. It may be more than one problem too. Its possible the dragging noise could be something between brake pads and rotor, but the grinding that comes and goes in reference to direction sounds like a bearing or joint. I would take it to a professional right away and ask for an estimate only, and then get other estimates from other shops as well. Good luck to you.

may be you should make a diagnostic and you can do it in a garage or you can do it by yourself if you want to do it by yourself you need some tools and you can find some good ones here: spobd2.com

Check front tyres & wheel bearings espesially the R/H/F. Feel tyre for high / low spots on inside & jack up & spin wheel if you get noise while jacked up it is not the tyres but wheel bearing or brake pads but more than likly a crook bearing by the sound of it. It needs to be tended to ASAP

It sounds like your car is low on power steering fluid. When the power steering fluid is low, the power steering pump is running dry, which makes a grinding or moaning sound. Check the power steering fluid level and top up if necessary. It should be on the left side of the engine compartment. Your owners manual should have the exact location of the power steering reservoir, and what type of power steering fluid to use.

Have you tried jacking up the front end and shaking your wheels back and forth if there is any movement at all you have a wheel assembly going out

maybe bearings, but I would check and make sure that the metal cover or the pads are not causing your noise on the right side. You may want to jack up the front end and turn you wheel hard left and rotate the tire and see/listen. Good Luck Tim

What kind of noise, if growling and grinding check and replace wheel bearing. If thumping clunking type noise check steering intermediate shaft, makes noise in both directions.

sounds like the power sterring pump check valve is failing because it only when you turn, try to turn the wheels standing still to verify the noise, if noise present, replace the ps pump.

Intermediate shaft is the most likely cause for this and your right there have been issues.

If the knocking sound is coming from the steering wheel area itself, then I believe it's the nylon bushing in the steering colum. My friend had the same problem with his truck. The other trucks we work on at the shop seem to have this common problem.

If it's sounds like its outside the truck, have the tie rod ends checked out.
