Does it just not shift up to 3rd or when it shifts to 3rd it is just like neutral?

    You have a burnt 3-4 clutch assembly. The transmission will need to be rebuilt.

Your transmission may be gone. The condition of the fluid and mileage would help in determining your solution. Another suggestion is a scan test with OBD II (auto zone free) and see if possibly your shift solenoids have stopped functioning. This is a electronic controlled transmission being a 1994. They all went electronic at the beginning of 1992. Mileage rule of thumb is they are on borrowed time after 120,000. I always try to save them if i can. So first scan test get any codes even if your check engine or service soon light is not on. Only because i have found codes even with those lights off. If no codes present then drop pan of trans, if no metal but fine powder like material its your clutches. Overhaul time. Be careful should run about 1800.00 at the most, 1200.00 at the least being a 4wd i hope this helps.

Had a similar problem with same model pickup but would shift into third only after reaching high RPM in second @5000. There was TSB that came out about this a few years ago. I had to replace the valve body in the transmission to fix the problem and worked perfectly after that. Hope this helps!

1994 Ford Escort, auto trans, 83,000 mi, randomly won't shift from 1st to 2nd, randomly loses power at hwy speeds

It could be an internal problem with a pump, or it could be it needs to be serviced really bad. Most 'oil change' places can also do transmission services... I'd try that first, before paying a big repair bill to a shop. good luck.

Transmission problesm

Hello;
Ahhhh I see from the next post why. Have you changed the transmission fluid and filter?
Let me know, and is this the only problem with the transmission you are aware of?
Thanks;

Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

If it has over 60000 miles it may need a transmission service, which includes a filter and fluid change, fluid may look fine but if filter is clogged and not picking up fluid fast enough when u give it gas the pump spins faster and forces fluid thru to shift, more fluid is needed to shift into higher gear.than to drive
