Removing the shunt fuse will do the job the same as removing the battery terminal but the other way is to use the code reader to reset the cpu

  • Bill Boyd Apr 05, 2013

People use different terminology for various parts of the car. I'm thinking that it is the fuseable link next to the battery. If you pull it there is no poer to the cpu or ignition switch.

My 1997kia sportage slowly came to a holt. And now won't kick over. It sounds like it wants to but it doesn't Oil water and fuel are algood. Any info is much appreciated thanks. Dave

Get it to a workshop and have them run an ECU diagnostic on it. Whatever error codes come up will determine the fault. It will save the guesswork and you throwing money at the problem. There are many potential failures or faults that could cause your Sportage to shut down (fuel pump, timing belt, ECU, relays or sensors, ignition module, fuses etc)

My speedometer isn't working in my Acura mdx 2005 and it won't shift outta first gear ?!

the speedometer is more then likely due to a fauly speed sensor on the transmission, presuming your check engine light is on, try resetting ecu by removing battery cables for 5 mins, then plugging them back on battery, ensure you have radio code before doing so to avoid locking the radio if it is still the stock radio, if problem is not resolved check engine codes for possible fault shift solenoids, also ensure there is enough transmission fluid, to check turn the car on let run for 10-15 mins to warm up oil, block the wheels and place transmission in neutral and verify correct level of oil, if no codes present and oil at right level, suspect a faulty torque converter in the transmission.

How do I reset ECU for 2006 RAV4

You can remove the fuse for the ECU or remove the battery for 10 mins or so ,should do the job. You probably have to drive the car through all its gears at varying revs before the ECU gets a chance to re-learn it'self

Transmission problem maybe in limip mode on 96 Chevy pickup. Could it be a short or fuse and how do I reset ecu /pcm?

You'll need an odb or odb11 code reader - plug in normally under dash. This way u can get fault codes. Reset PCM is normally battery neg off for 30 secs to 5 mins. Normally clears codes - but if prob still exists fault code or engine check light should re-appear after first start of car or 2nd. Hope that helps a bit...

Pulled a fuse and put it back in then airbag light came on

Record your radio presets, then remove the negitive battery cable to reset the ecu/bcm and it might take care of the light. im guessing it set a open/short code for the bcm when you pulled the fuse. By removing the negitive battery cable for 5 mins you will reset the ecu/bcm .

What does this DIAGNOSTIC code P01A4 for pt cruiser mean please help

The engine management light comes on to inform you that the engine is not working correctly and it stores a fault code in the ECU with information on what is wrong. You can only access this information via a diagnostic device.
If the DME (engine) ECU keeps on seeing a fault on the engine operation it then goes into limp mode to protect the engine from damage (low power or stops) when you cycle the ignition it can reset the ECU and the process starts again (depending on what the fault is).

I remember something about some codes being in hex or base sixteen so did a hex to decimal conversion and got 420... Car is not strictly obd compliant as I think 03 onwards for diesel but I think the code is hex so should be p0420. If it is, cat below efficency, check what the lambda after cat is showing in live data.

I advise you to take your car to a Chrysler main dealership or specialist to have a real time diagnostic check done so a full diagnose can be given (this will have a set charge of approx 20 mins labour).

It could be a failed part on the engine system or just a software glitch that will require an ECU programme update.

Hope helped.

ABSOLUTELY NO POWER WE'VE CHECKED JUST BOUT EVERYTHING. MY QUESTION IS COULD IT BE THE COMPUTER AND IF COULD BE RESET

It is recommended that the engine ECU is reset after any engine performance modifications have been made to the vehicle, including using a higher octane fuel, to accelerate the learning of any new parameters. Resetting the ECU will also clear any stored error codes, however if you have a fault with your vehicle it is advisable that these codes are retrieved rather than wiped as they may help in diagnosing the problem.

  1. Make sure the ignition is turned off
  2. Remove the engine bay fuse box cover
  3. Remove the 20Amp/25Amp EFI fuse
  4. Remove the 15Amp ETCS fuse
  5. Wait 30 seconds
  6. Re-insert the two fuses
  7. Install the fuse box cover

It is also possible to reset the engine ECU by removing the battery. Please note that this method will also reset any memory settings such as radio presets, trip mileage, clock etc.

Good luck... and remember rated this help!!
