I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and it wont fire.

I have a 88 volvo 740 GLE and i was going down the road and my car shut off. I got it started a couple of times but now it will not start. I have replace the fule pump, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and it still won't start. Would it be the distributor or the timeing belt? Because right now it won't even fire.

I have checked the spark and is not one. I heard it might be the ignition control module, or the canckshaft sensor. What do you think?

I have a 1987 Volvo 740 & it is not getting fire. I've replaced the battery, coil, plug wires, plugs, distributor, distributor cap & rotor, ignition module, and many relays. I even had the computer module checked out and was told it was OK. I've checked all the connections & ground. The engine just turns over & will not start. It's getting fuel. What left to check or replace?

Also the cam sensor was replaced when I replaced the distributor.

The problem wont be your timing belt. you need to take out a spark plug plug it into your HT lead and check for a strong spark or even if there is a spark. check your contact breakers on the distributor as well

What type of distributor is it ? beacause you might have set your points wrong and have you set your spark plug gaps right ?

My friend has a 1988 Volve 740 GLE that has problems starting from time to time. She had someone change the fuel pump but it still does the same thing. She now says when the car is running and she turns on...

Hi,
That sounds like an ECU problem.
Better bring that Volvo to the nearest dealer and have them scan your computer for any anomalies in the system.
Hope FixYa solved that problem.

How do I turn off service engine light on 1988 volvo 740 gle

One way that always works is to disconnect the battery for at least ten minutes. If the cause of the check engine light turning on in the first place is not fixed, then the light will come on again pretty quickly after starting the car.
To reset your service light here are the steps.

1. Get in your car and shut the door.
2. Put your key in the ignition
3. Turn your ignition key to position 1
4. Push in your Odometer reset button and hold it in while holding it move the ignition key to position 2 while holding down the odometer reset button.
5. After couple of seconds of holding the button down and the key in position 2 your service light will start to blink once that happens let go of the reset button and start the car.

1988 volvo 740 gle non-turbo loud fuel pump

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? It is located under the cars center on the left side ..

You will find it alongside the main high pressure fuel pump on a metal support plate held up with 3 bolts.
Remove the 3 bolts with a 10mm socket wrench to lower the plate. Place a catch pan below the filter to catch any leaking fuel.
Be careful not to get fuel in you eyes or running down your arms. Remove the 2 bolts holding the banjo fuel pipe connections to the filter.
Note the direction of the filter.
Loosen the clamp holding the filter to the support plate and slide out the old filter.
Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one and use new copper sealing washers on the banjo connections.
