My first thought was that the timing belt had snapped, but you have a timing chain and it says this

Best Answer. Your Ford Windstar had two engine options and they both ran a timing chain, not a timing belt. Belts need to be replaced at around 100K miles, but since you have a hardened steel timing chain, you have nothing to worry about. Your chain should last the life of the engine without being serviced.

Has the oil ever been changed. You saying there was a 'pop' concerns me but it may have been a backfire, or unburned fuel popping through the Throttle Body.

And then there is the grinding sound, but that might just be the starter on the flywheel.

The only way to diagnose is to call out a mobile mechanic.

Probably the Inertia switch. Look up "Inertia switch, 2001 Windstar" and see any photos produced. This is a resettable safety switch and usually is around the front floor kickpanels. Just push in on the button and hold it for a second and it will reconnect. These parts are made to disconnect power to the fuel pump. Certain bumps can trigger it or even slamming a door.

Check for 12 volt at fuel pump when key is on, if not check fuse block. if power is at pump, replace pump.

your problem is the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. sending a picture.

Was the fuel pump new? When this much work is involved never use salvage parts. The fuel pump run function is interlocked with engine oil pressure sensor to indicate engine is running. On initial startup the fuel pump run is momentary to prime the injectors. Your problem is probably the oil pressure sensor or sending unit

It may be due to plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, or mass airflow sensor. Is your check engine light on?

The problem with your van is the CAM Sensor, I believe the noise you are hearing is kind of a chirping sound. I just had mine fixed (12/19/09) it was about $150 for parts and labor from a local Mech. not a dealer.
