After running for a little while starts to idle rough and stalls out. no lights come on after stall. starts right back up but the rpm gauge drops to 0 quick and car stops running. no code comes up on code reader. this only happens after the car has been warmed up. trac light is now on. brand new spark plugs and wires, new oil change, new battery. thinking this might be a sensor of some sort?
Crankshaft sensor or cam sensor.fuel filter.

check your Temp sensor for the ecu. could be out of spec at lower temps but not enough to send a code "You know -40 is possible and won't send a code"

I just went through lots of troubleshooting and expense on my 1996. Whenever I would lift my foot off the accelerator and was below about 30 mph, the rpm's would starts jumping around and sometimes it would stall. If I gave it a little gas (accelerator), I could sometimes keep it running. It also backfired once in a while. Starts right back up. Also, if I let it idle while in part, it would die after 1-2 minutes.
I ended up finding a hole in the fuel regulator. About a ~$70 part if you get an AC Delco, but very simple to change.

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? If it's not that, and it's not a vacuum leak, it is probably your idle air control valve.

sound like vacuum leak or fuel pump problems.scan it to see if egr valve sticking open.
Here is the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.
To correct this problem Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, NEVER USE CARB CLEANING SPRAY, IT DESTROYS THE ANTI-STICK TEFLON COATING, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.
