First step is see the Condition of the oil.
Them you need to see if the ENGINE is NOT LOCKED UP.
To Do that, you will need a Rachet and Socket to Try TURN the CRANKSHAFT pulley by Hand.
If you are ABLE to Rotate,
And the Battery is good, Check all the Connection from the BATTERY to the STarter motor,
And the Ground Cable. From battery To the Chassis and the Bolt at the Transmission.
But if you are Unable to TURN over the Crankshaft Pulley.
The Engine is Locked up.
And will need to take a Opinion of a Mechanic .
To be sure Of the problem and the condition that may affect to the ENGINE went damaged.
I hope this help on your problem.
Thank you for use fixya...

Okay .. had the EXACT same problem - word for word .. turns out, that my positive battery cable was corrodid badly.. the ignition switch wasnt getting any power or signal - so it didnt know the trans was in park, so it locked the key in place... and all power cut off obviously because no juice was going thru the cable.
Apparently however.. you will get almost the exact same symptoms if the ignition switch burns out... so first test the battery cables themselves.. if they are fine .. then plan on replacing the ignition switch.

Sounds like carbon build up on the contacts inside the electrical ignition switch which is not the key cylinder. Its located on the lower steering coluum if coluum shift or if you have a floor shift it will be inside the console
