This is a common problem, usually it is because of spills which leak into mechanism of shifter, so check by popping off shifter bezel cover and see if any residual sticky goo is on cable connector cable. If not the issue, then wear and tear on this cable, is gets shorter over time and does not release key, and if you cannot turn ignition off, your battery will die in a couple hours as all electronics is still on.

Rather than paying for a new cable, and the labor you can save a few hundred dollars with this simple fix. The yellow plastic clip is sometimes broken, or comes out of shifter frame. Pop bank in if not broken, it pops out easily when it wears a bit. If that is in place, then look toward the front where red cable retention clip goes into metal bracket, it snaps up or down easily. Pull it up to release, then move backwards slightly and you will find you can reposition it one slot back in bracket, push bank down, it will click into place just as it was positioned originally, it works perfectly, check the key to be sure it releases, replace bezel and you just saved yourself several hundred dollars.

Some ignition system locks will not release the key unless you push in towards the column while turning further off. It is a safety device to stop in advertent removal of the key while moving. Try that first.

SOURCE: key stuck in ignition

I found it necessary to try two of the the fixes listed before I solved the problem. Here's what I learned, as it relates to my 2000 V70:

1. The lock button on the shifter WAS stuck in the depressed mode. So I squirted a bit of WD-40 and--presto! It was released. But my problem wasn't solved. On examining the button action a little more, I noticed it it wasn't FULLY freed. So, another squirt of WD-40 and a few more press/releases, and---PERFECT. BUT the problem was not solved.

2. I next tried to "lift" the "shift override" button using pliers with gentle-to-moderate pressure so as not to break the plastic. It did lift a little, but still no solution. So I squirted a bit of WD-40 into the space around the button and pushed the button several times to "work-in" the WD-40. No luck. In fact, the button seemed stuck in a depressed mode even more.

3. Finally, to the SOLUTION! Since I could no longer get a grip on the button, I introduced 2 thin-bladed knives to barely exposed opposing side surfaces and pried the switch-button up. Still, no luck, but going back to the pliers and gentle/moderate pressure, I was able to pull the button up, and----SUCCESS!!!!

Notes: I am surprised at how much travel there was in the button--a good 3/16" it seems.

I don't know what caused the button to seize in the depressed state. I never use it and I don't think that I've ever spilled anything on/in it. But its horizontal position just begs for this kind of problem.

SOURCE: 1998 Volvo V70 ignition switch turn 360 degrees

This is the problem with the ignition switch.
The lock cylinder into which the key is inserted, and the electronic switch that sits just behind the lock cylinder are not in proper alignment with each other.
Probably before you plan to replace the switch you can take the switch of and put it back in, many a times that will fix the alignment issue.

Thanks
Kevin

SOURCE: key stuck in ignition

Hi I am vortash I had this once and it was the same vehicle I cut a thin piece of plastic from an old credit card just slightly thinner than the key and applied some superglue to it onl a very tiny amount in the middle of the plastic I applied it with a pin so not to put too much on .. I then eased it into the keyhole next to the key waited 5 minutes for the glue to dry and managed to gently pull it out but if you dont fancy that idea I have also seen it done by drilling a vey small hole in the top of the broken Key with a Dremel and a fine drill bit and a small allen key with loctite on it pushed and tapped into the hole .. that worked also .. hope this helps Regards Vortash

Lost power steering, car died, changed battery, and barley made it home. The battery has power, but when you turn the key on the dome light and other lights, radio, windows, etc don't work.

Sounds like the vehicle is not charging you may need a new alternator get the car going with jump leads again and test the voltage at the battery terminals with a DC volt meter expect 13.5-14.5 if you get less than 13.5 your alternator is bad or wiring fault also check the alternator belt is tight.

Steering wheel will only turn slightly in either direction, can't turn the key either way it is a 2000 Chrysler Voyager

most cars have a steering lock that engages when you turn off the car. If you try wiggling the wheel while you turn the key, that might free up your steering. If just wiggling it a little does not work, try pulling it one way and turning the key, giving it a little force turning the wheel (sometimes the wheel locking mechanism gets stuck) ... if it still doesn't work, try turning the wheel the other way and turning the key. If you are still locked up .. you'll probably need to see a mechanic about it. Hopefully the wheel lock is just a little stuck and you can free it up yourself -- it's free that way :-)

Ignition key wont turn have tried everything from turning steering wheel and making sure that it was in park does the ignitoun need to be changed and is it job that i could do or does it need to go to the...

Try banging on the shifter, if this works, spray some silicone spray into the shifter at the release button (the cable from the shifter to the ignition lock sticks sometimes). If this doesn't work, you may have to replace the ignition lock. It is held in with 2 breakoff bolts that have to be drilled out.

My starter is stuck in ignition lock, and we can't get the key to start the truck. How do we get the ignition out of LOCK?

The steering wheel is in a position that will not release the key you will have to turn the steering wheel as hard as you can to the left and try to turn the key if that doesn't do it go to the right. that should get your key out.

2005 S40 wont start. Message says key error?

Do you have the remote, i.e. The deadlock system is activated and deactivated using the remote control key fob, which allows the driver to open the car as they approach. It seems you have activated the steering lock which is for preventing thieves to make a getaway. Use the remote to deactivate it and then try starting the car.......sodeep
P.S. The security system is a built-in feature of this model
