Hello ,Can any body help please?. Ive just bought a citroen dispatch 2.0 hdi, It seems to lack power, if you hold the throttle on steady 3000 revs when driving the van surgers and you get black smoke on and off, if you disconnect the air flow meter it stops smoking but still has power loss, i have tried a new airflow meter but the problem is still there, changed the maf sensors and fuel filter and made sure that the van had a tank full of fresh fuel Any ideas Please
Which is standard or the best motor oil for HDI?
My dispatch van is blowing black smoke
Have you tried without the air filter housing? a blocked air intake could do this
Where do you blank the EGR off? (it is only a gov demanded emission device that saps power so is safe to leave blanked) have you tried it with an open inlet? with just the air flow meter, try it then get back!
Chris
Hi, by open inlet I mean nothing past the airflof meter, take the air filter cover off! can you get to the EGR? (sometimes they are really hard to get to) usually they are attached by 2 or3 small bolts or screws, if you can unbolt it and make a solid blanking gasket out of a but of a can or thin metal then bolt it down, this seals it (for the consumers point of view the EGR does nothing usefull, they sap power to give slightly better emissions in very rare conditions to please the EU, they also hinder good  fuel efficiency).
Given the black smoke stops when you cut the vacum to the valve it sounds like the valve is mis-behaving and blanking the manifold off will help (the EGR, when open or faulty, connects the exhaust before the turbo to the inlet manifold, it takes pressure away from the turbo and pollutes the incoming air.
Blank the EGR at the exhaust manifold! (might be a right"b" to get to)

Hello citroenchris Ive looked at air filter box its as clean as a whistle, also i have replaced the egr valve,it still surgers unless i blank off the vacuum pipe to the egr valve then it runs ok but still lacks power
Thanks again your knowledge is greater than mine so you have to bear with me. when i said that i had blanked off the new egr valve, what i did was to disconnect tha vac pipe to the erg valve and blank off the other end near the bulk head, i dont know what its called it looks a bit like a windscreen washer motor, then it runs ok ish, but as soon as i reconnect the vac pipe thats when you get the black smoke surging on a steady throttle. Sorry i dont know what you mean by open inlet just with the airflow meter, thanks for you help in this matter. Glenn
Thanks for that, yes it is a bastard to get to because i fitted the new one on my back on the drive, what a job!!. i Think i will take it in to the garage and get them to put a blanking plate on, it might be a couple of weeks though, thanks again for your help.Glenn
