I have heard the correct transmission oil level can only be measured with diagnostic equipment and the dipstick is used as a rough check during the initial fill.
Not sure where the plug is to remove to use the temporary dipstick.
Transmission fluid (ATF), like engine oil, should be checked regularly. The transmission box has a dipstick, like the engine. To check the ATF level, firstly locate the dipstick which is in the engine compartment. You will see the tube which carries the dipstick runs at an angle to the transmission box as opposed to the engine oil dipstick which runs almost directly down.
Checking the level involves starting the car and while the engine is running with the selector lever in P (Park) remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then push it back and remove it again. Now you can check the level. Fluid is usually added into the dipstick tube.
If you are losing ATF, check for leaks because the A/T usually does not consume ATF.
The dipstick is located near the back of the engine near the engine firewall (on top). Also its a red color. You shouldn't miss it. It is not true that you don't need to change the fluid for 200,000 miles like someone said above. Mercedes recommends changing it at 50,000 miles and that's when I had mine done to protect my warranty by following the guidelines.
The 99 C230 has a "dipstick tube" located in rear of engine close to the firewall accessible from passanger's side under hood. This tube should be covered by a black plastic top. Remove the top and insert a long piece of thin plastic-covered cable (very thin, like 1-2 mm) -- pull this cable back out as soon as you start to feel resistance. It should be wet with red transmission fluid. If it is brown, the fluid should be changed by a "QUALIFIED" technician who will use the correct fluid & procedures
That is where you put the oil when you are low on oil or when you an oil change. When you open the hood you should see a oil dipstick. Make sure the car has been off for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Have a clean paper towel and remove the dipstick. make sure its the dipstick if you have an automatic transmission. trans fluid is red in color oil will be golden to dark black depending on how often you change the oil. wipe the dipstick off and at the end you will see a full mark near the end. Replace the dipstick back into the tube you removed it from and pull it out again, check the end where it says full. If there is oil up to the full mark your good, if not add oil through the oil cap hole in valve cover top. re-wipe the dip stick and check to see if full. Add oil as needed. If you keep up with your oil changes as required depending on the oil requirements. 10w30 regular oil is every 3,000 miles. Castrol synthetic oil is every 21,000 miles. Use a good oil filter. Consult your auto parts dealer.
There is a 8mm or 10mm plug on the back of the transmission (underneath the car) When you pull that plug if fluid comes out then it it full. If not you add fluid until it just barely comes out that hole and then the transmission is full.
Now you add fluid from the top of the transmission. You have to look way down in the engine bay on top of the transmission for a red or black cap. It may say "do not open" or "open by a technician only." Take and pull that cap off and this is the fill spout for the transmission. It's a fill only, not a check. Add from this spout until it comes out that little plug on the back of the transmission.
You will hear people call this a "sealed" transmission of "non-serviceable." Now you can tell them rubbish lol.
To check the condition you can look to see if it is getting black or smells burnt. After 50,000 miles the fluid needs flushed and after 100,000 miles you need to change the filter and gasket for the transmission.
yes first remove the air cleaner housing witch is black plastic big housing with two air duct connect to front cross member pulling upwards have a look back right hand side the engine bay behind the engine you can see black small tube, it have covered by black cap with read lock you have to pull and brake read lock to open the cap some model have oil dipstick tube also near that be careful open the right one transmission dipstick tube shorter than oil dipstick tube you have to open shot one if you have good look you can see it's going to transmission or engine for adjust transmission oil you have to check transmission oil temp and you need right dipstick for that the dipstick only have with authorized Mercedes service center maybe could find from other workshops too not sure for check oil temp you need a diagnose cpu.
Mercedes have purposely not put a transmission dipstick in their cars...to STOP any unauthorised persons from tampering with transmission fluid levels.
Electronic transmissions are extremely temperamental - if incorrect type, level is too low (or too high), this will accelerate premature wear and tear, not to mention erratic shifting behaviour.
For this reason, only Mercedes service agents have the required workshop tool (ie dipstick) which they insert into a tube in the transmission, to check levels.
If you happen to obtain the correct tool for your own use....please ensure you use only Mercedes specified fluids....and NEVER overfill the transmission case.
Remove the dipstick for the transmission fluid (red one) - get a funnel that fits inside the dipstick tube - and add transmission fluid till proper level. Do not overfill.
Does the car have a transmission dipstick? Look on the passenger side of the engine compartment towards the firewall to find the dipstick tube. If it has a dipstick there will be a square top on it with a locking mechanism. Run car to normal operating temerature, unlock the dipstick pull it out wipe it off push it back in and pull it back out then look to see if the fluid is between the marks. If not just add fluid through the tube.
If you don't have a dipstick there will be a smaller cap with red plastic lock on it. You will have to break the red lock to get the cap off. There is a special tool from Mercedes to check the level on these non dipstick units. If you think it is low then add 1 quart and road test for proper operation and shifting.
is there a way to put my conv top up manually? Mercedes 300 ce, 1994
