When i put into drive from 2wd i hear a grinding noise, it wont move at all. Drives fine in 4wd with power to front wheels. Help determine problem?
I would guess your differential. Raise your rear end and try rotating wheel, it should make the other wheel spin the opposite direction. I'd the other wheel doesn't spin, I would say it's your differential.
would you consider slip yoke?
that is very possible, but I think you would have known something happened when it broke. is there any way you can safely get under the vehicle with a helper? that will help greatly in locating the issue.
i do have a helper yes. i knew it broke when it did, it made a loud pop, started grinding and had no power to wheels. only will drive in 4 wheel. i dont see any exterior damage, but i can hear it grinding when i press on the gas and its in drive when drivetrain is spinning. when i put it in neutral, it comes to a slow, and then seems like its hitting a flat spot and stops.
i dont think its transfer case or transmission, because if it was transfer case, i would imagine just the 4wd would not work, or it would be locked in just front wheels. which it does transfer from 4wd to 2wd smoothly.
ya if the driveshaft is turning, but it doesn't spin the differential input shaft it is definately the slip yoke. Not to bad of fix either, driveshaft may be a bit pricey, but I bet you could pick one up cheap at a pull-n-pay. Get new U-joints as well. Enjoy :-)

It seems like no one else hear at FixYa is responding yet to both your requests about clunking in 4wd.
I see two requests....in the first a 2000 blazer from Gloeckz
there is a rapid clunking in 4wd!
In the second it clunks hard going in then won't drive!

I'm no trans specialist and not familiar with repairing or troubleshooting serious 4wd problems but it sounds like this may be a problem in the transfer case.
Since no one seems to be helping you but me I'd suggest you go to a transmission shop and ask them if this is a common problem that may lead to a bad transfer case if not corrected!
Make sure you have the proper fluid in your transmission case, transfer case and differential case first or have a quick oil change place check it for you!

You probably have a bad encoder motor.It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black.The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

I would think there is a problem with the tranfer case. I would check the fluid level in the rearend and address the leak.
