What kind of engine? If it's a 3.0L Vulcan, you have to take off the upper and lower intake manifolds and you'll be able to take the valve covers off. There's a bunch to take off before you get to that point. The EGR Valve, Throttle body assembly, ignition coil pack, etc. Make sure you relieve the fuel system pressure (it might be behind the right side well cover of your trunk- disconnect that connection), and take off the negative battery terminal before begining work.

use a 15mm box wrench on the nut retaining the tensioner pulley to pry the tensioner 'arm' against the spring to release belt. note belt routing on decal under hood,or make a sketch,to aid in replacement.
on OHV engine rotate clockwise
on OHC rotate counter clockwise
be sure belt is completely seated on pulleys

remove the valve cover bolts. remove the valve cover. scrape off the old gasket material off the cover and the engine. put the new gasket in place and replace the bolts and tighten...dont over tighten.

remove spark plugs and high tension cords/ remove the valve cover bolts using socket wrench/ use screw driver to lift up the valve cover/ clean the lid/ put a new gasket and put silicone gasket sealant on the edge of half moon rubber gasket to avoid leak/ tighten the bolts/ put the plugs and wire back...
