I have a 2003 Saturn Ion 2 with noisy interior ventilation. 1. When the fan is on (warm or cool air, air conditioner, or defroster), there's a "clicking" sound that comes from the area around the front passenger's feet. It sounds a bit like a cricket, or like something's stuck in the fan (i.e. pine straw), but it's been like that for months, and I just had my air filter changed and there wasn't anything stuck in there. It varies with the speed of the fan; I only hear it on 1st or 2nd speed (although maybe it's just that at higher speeds the sound of the airflow drowns out the sound of the clicking). It's not all the time, just most of the time. It varies in volume. There's no noticeable pattern to the frequency or volume. Sometimes it will briefly stop if you turn the fan all the way up then back down, or off then on again, but it always starts back up again sooner or later. 2. When the air conditioner (or defroster, which includes A/C) is on, it growls! Not always, but usually. The volume of the growl varies. And there's a delay... the growl starts a few seconds after the A/C is turned on, and stops a few seconds after it's turned off. It's kind of like the sound of an A/C compressor kicking on and off. At first I thought it only happened when it rained, but the other day it happened in dry heat.
"Chirping" noise from under passenger side dash when fan is turned on in position 1, 2 or 3. It doesn't matter if A/C or heat is on, but sometimes can make it stop temporarily by changing the temp control.

Thank you, jeffrie317! If I tell my mechanic "it probably needs a blower motor," is that all he needs to know? Or do I need to take it to the Saturn dealership for some reason? Also, is that just for the chirping, or for the growling too? Thank you, jeffrie317! If I tell my mechanic "it probably needs a blower motor," is that all he needs to know? Hello,
Did you have a specific engine code requiring replacement of the Cam Position Sensor?
Did you recently replace the thermostat or run low on coolant or have some other cooling system work done? The temperature sensor can be bad, or simply have a loose wire connection. Check those. There can be air in the coolant system as well. Finally, the thermostat could be sticking and will need to be replaced.
These issues have nothing to do with the Air Conditioner. However, the AC will not cool if the car is sitting still unless the condenser fans (electric) are running. Turn on the AC and check to ensure the cooling fans energize.
Most of these items you can check yourself, however if not, then have your mechanic or a mechanically inclined family member or friend check them for you.
1. Could be a caught foreign object between A/C (air conditioning) fan and cooling radiator, producing this loud noise. 2. Could be a damaged fan blade, mowing the cooling radiator. 3. Could be a loud noise comming from the fan's electrical motor. 4. Could be a broken off fin (small wing) of the cooling radiator, striking the A/C fan, producing this loud noise.
for parts try www.schramauto.com 1-800-292-1032 and try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you
