98 bonneville no start

I have a 1998 pont. bonneville in the shop. Fuel pressure good after a few mins. or less it will shut off like turning the ignition off. No codes are present, when it shuts off there is no spark at coils. I have checked live data with my snap on scan tool and have cam sensor data, ect. It will eventually start, but problem appears to getting more frequent. Another shop had replaced ignition module but problem persits, now I'm trying to diagnose and repair. Could this be an ignition switch problem ?

No security light, This customer has driven the car for several days at a time with no issues then it will shut off and sometimes will re-start right away and other time she said she will keep trying to start it and it eventually start. I have monitored the fuel pressure at all times while idling in shop. When it shuts off it has no fire from any coils. I did check on another post on here that there is supposed to be an eprom update for this issue that has to be performed at the dealership, but I 'm an independant and I don't believe my dealers will help me with this. They would want the car to be brought to their shop, which if the update has to be done I have no choice. This customer is a student and is from out of town, so I'm trying to help her as best as I can. I also seen on another post about ignition wires or connections at the switch that could cause same symptoms, which I will try to check out tomorrow. I did unplug the cam sensor and tried to start and it ran with it unplugged, never seen that before. After re-installing the connector of course I had a fault code, which I cleared. I was leaning toward a possible engine computor failure, but in my past experiences, generally there is no communication with my snap on scannner, so I have kind of ruled that out, but not sure about this eprom update. I have no acces to any TSB'S that GM may have on this car. Thanks..

I did have a grand am in about 2 weeks ago that had a no start issue, and it was a security problem which I figured out. The bonneville will run fine at times and for days, then will shut off and not re-start at times.

The anti-theft system has nothing to do with spark . When it won't start check for B+ voltage at the ignition module . pin P a pink wire . Check pin K for a good ground . Check the 18X & 3X crank sensor signals to the PCM . It's good you have a snap on scan tool an can check sensor data , but to check cam an crank signal's you really need a scope ! Does your snap on tool have a lab scope ( oscilloscope ) Do you know what this is ?
How to test crank sensor on GM 3800 engine 3x and 18x signals

Do you have access to wiring diagrams ? Check electrical distribution in an out of the ignition switch .Free wiring diagrams here
http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info Year , make , model and engine size . Under system click on electrical distribution , then under subsystem click on power distribution . Click the search button , then the blue link ! I wouldn't think the ignition switch being the problem but you never know without testing ! Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Using a wiring diagram to pin point areas for testing ?

SOURCE: 98 firebird no spark new

Did you replace the oil sending unit? It will kill spark to the engine to stop engine damage when the oil pump goes out.

1987 pont bonn 3.8 eng won't start

Check fuel pressure, a quick way to do this is to spray starting fluid into the engine air intake, if the engine starts and dies out you have no fuel pressure. Other no start problems are no spark, and mechanical engine issues like a timing chain failure.

What would cause fuel pump in a 1998 Bonneville not to run when key is in on position?

The pump is only suppose to work for a few seconds with key on/engine off. This primes the fuel system. then it runs when cranking and as engine runs. With key on it should, however, build up pressure and then shut off. Only real way to tell what is going on is use of a test guage often available at parts store loan-a-tool items. Shop manual will tell you correct pressure at key on and when running. Wrong pressure (low) can be bad pump, filter, regulator, relay or leaky injectors and other leaks. Very common for pump in tank to fail and often it will draw excess curent first damaging the relay.

Have a 98 bonneville.suddenly started losing antifreeze.than engine light came on blinking.the car shook and shut down.won t start.wondering if i should replace upper intake only.

i would get a compression check done on it,
if compression is fine you can get away with just the intake gasket
if you use dexcool i recommend mixing it 50/50 with distilled water
less chance of it becoming corrosive that way.

98 chevy cavalier cranks but wont start changed fuel pump, computer, crank shaft position sensor and the theft system light is staying on

try to start the car, than the anti theift would shut the car off. you wait ten min with the key on, until you see the anti theift flash or disapear. than turn key to off position and try to start it. this will reprogram the computer.. Good luck.

you can also try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes

1998 suzuki esteem 1.6 will not start HELP!

Having good fuel pressure is a plus (yours seems a bit high but I don't have specs) What you need to find out is if the injectors are opening and putting the fuel into the engine so it can work. Are the plugs wet with fuel or dry? Does it fire up if you spray carb cleaner into the throttle body while cranking?

I have an electrical problem. My fuses are all good but I lost power to my windows, doorlocks, seats, and my fuel pump. Now my car won't start. Can you help me please? Thank you. 96 Pontiac...

well the window and seat problem is probably a broken wire in the harness between the door and body open rubber boot and inspect and repair
the fuel i would start by checking for power at connector back by fuel tank you should have power with key on for about 10 seconds then turn key off and wait for a few seconds and try if you have power it is probably the fuel pump

1998 Pont Bonne won't start after quitting on the interstate

fuel pump failure is most likely the culprit. Take it to a shop to be sure.

ign coils do not commonly just stop putting out juice but i guess there is always an exception. check your fuses and make sure a fuse just didn't decide to pop.

The infrequency and it starting after "cooling" down does indicate a fuel pump failure, since once the pump "warms" up it seizes, and when it cools down it works again. This is common, however it's not an easy/cheap repair unfortunately.
