I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan v6 3.0 with 83,000 miles. It just started making a rattling noise when idling, sometimes while driving, but stops when you hit the gas. It seems to be coming from the center rear of the engine. We have already ruled out the catalytic converter. Any other ideas?
Low oil pressure cam and crank bearings oil pump ect.
Heat sheild maybe on exhaust somewhere?

You need to remove the starter and check the pinion gear. Sounds as if there is a shim missing, which will cause the pinion gear to hit the ring gear, causing noise, and considerable damage to both. Make sure the gears are all good. Another possibility is if you bought a rebuilt starter from autozone or somebody like that , the pinion stop wasn't installed, or the wrong one was installed, which will cause the starter gear to go to far out and get stuck, hitting the ring gear.

On the weekend,I'm only able to get hold of a 2001 explored view picture.
Here is the LINK to one web page for a 2001 Caravan.
I can get picture for a 1996 on Monday.
As far as I know the parts are the similar.
=====
Before you start,please get hold of a strong magnet and a cotton cloth (T-shirt)
These will help speed up the fix.
You will need Torx head bits or driver
=====
Inspect the front and rear facing portion of the door panel in question for miss silver color torx bolt(s)
Give all trox bolts a 1/8 turn or until tighen
=====
There is a ~$10 door panel remove tool you can purchase at auto part store.
See sample pictures HERE
It's your call.
Without this tool you may damage few pop in post.
===
Carefully remove the electrical connection.
===
There will be a white and thin vapor barrier.
You will damage it as you ease it open.
Have duct tape and plastic sheet ready to re-seal the inner.
===
Place a strong magnet inside a T-shirt and locate the loose parts.
A bright flashlight and 2nd pair of eyes will be helpful.
===
You have to improvise from here.
I will assume it will be PART # 12,36 and 38 spare and clip.
===
Please keep me up to date on the fix via email.

Could be the timing belt tensioner. They are known to make a rattling noise when worn and/or the belt has stretched....When is the last time you had the belt serviced? They should be replaced and pulleys inspected at 100,000 miles. Gates recommends 120,000 miles on their belts. Good luck, i hope this helps.

Depends what the rattling is really... If it's the engine , could need a valve adjustment... I've also heard of torque converters make a rattle when going bad, but only when in drive or reverse
