I have a '94 Montero 3.5 dohc that has an intermittent starting problem. Drive it all day it starts every time hot. when it cools down sometimes it won't start. I can smell gas when cranking it and it sounds like it is out of time.I suspect the crank position sensor. I have a manual that tells me the codes and how to initiate the sequence of every moter but the 3.5 dohc. how do I initiate the sequence and does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

Could very well be a security system failure telling the computer that the vehicle is being stolen. I had the same issue with my jeep and there was a wire i had to ground out to bypass the alarm system. look into that

need another car side by side and swop bits over till you hit whatever is causing the problem,my suggestion is a sensor but what one??

I have the same problem on my 2002 Eclipse RS 2.4l 4 cylinder. Replaced the battery, starter, fuel pump(not at one time) . It started up when I had the starter put on as well the fuel pump. But everytime I started the car up it ran good till I turned it off the problem was still there. The car sounds like it wants to start but it sputters you can smell the gas so I know its getting fuel. it starts up fine with a cold start like in the morning.
Try getting a diagnostic thats what Im going to do next week.
good luck!!!

On this model engine, the power to the coil pack is delivered directly from the power transistors located inside the PCM.
If you are not getting the signal to fire going into the coil, verify you are getting a good waveform from the crank angle sensor, and that the wiring from it to the PCM is intact. If the crank sensor is delivering signal to the PCM, and the PCM is not generating pulse via the internal power transistors, the PCM has failed (the power transistors blow open, it is fairly common on this Chrysler PCM).

The battery/ brake light was caused by the alternator. so make sure the battery is good and good connections. turn the headlights on and be sure they are bright.
