just did a u joint on the passenger side a few months ago. when i did, had alot of wheel wobble and the u-joint was obviously broken. now, i have no wobble and both appear to be fine.

yes, it does sound like a u-joint again, but both look great, not even a crack. would there be anything in the hub that could be loose? if so would it make that similar noise?

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

nope no bind, and the clicking is only when rotating, at a high enough speed. i can just barely get 1-2 clicks out when spinning it by hand. gets really loud while driving

get the noise no matter what, i do notice a harsh tugging when i turn in 4 wheel. noise does get a little louder with 4 wheel.

How many u-joints have been replaced? Have any CV Joints or U-joints been done in front end?

It sound like a wheel joint. They are u-joints right behind the brake rotors. If you had one replaced, the other one might have went bad. Or the new one might be junk.

Turn your wheels to the steering stop with the front wheel jacked up and turn the tires, see if they bind up.

Do you just get the clicking noise when you turn?

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

Is this only in 4 wheel drive or do you get the same noise in 2 wheel?

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

I would pull the front axles to get a better look at those joints.

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

You can feel if they are tight when they are in the truck. And they really don't take that long to remove.

If you take the axle in you hand you should be able to flex the joint while you turn the axle in your hand. Both ways

2001 dodge diesel 2500 when I brake I here a load clunk and it pulls to the left were the noise is coming from

Check the brake caliper. Take a screwdriver and compress the caliper a little bit, you can do this with the tire still on. Drive and see if the clunk went away, and comes back after you drive it, try it again, and if the same thing happens, replace the caliper. Also check your shock mounts, ball joints and tie rod ends. Replace any that are worn, (you shouldn't have any looseness in either rod ends and ball joints, they should move, but not have any play in them) make sure that all rubber mounts are not worn or loose.

Rear end noise, shaking

Check the rear driveshaft u-joints. Most likely the rear u-joint at the differential is seized/seizing. May here a rotational squeaking at low speeds. If you want to check it yourself. Remove the rear driveshaft and move the u-joint in each direction and check for tightness. Do so with both ends. Let me know how it works out for ya!

Most likely U Joints in the front axles. These will only turn in 4 wheel drive.

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 4wd and I am changing the u-joints on the front drive shaft. The u-joint up front has no e-clips on the outer side. What holds this in, that must be removed , if...

The clips you are looking for are on the inside. They are circular and you need to just tap them out with a flat tip or a very small punch then you can press the caps out.

Rear end squeak

Noise is coming from a dry u-joint and or the carrier bearing if equiped. Usually a u-joint "cherps" in reverse first then only gets worse with time. If it starts vibrating at highway speeds replace them immediately.

Clicking noise in front end 2001 dodge ram 4x4

I have a 2002 Dodge 1500 Ram 4x4, quad cab and had the same problem. In 2wd the clicking was constant, in 4wd it would go away. Also I had no 4wd while in 4wd, found that out after a snow storm. I took my truck to a buddies garage (a Dodge mechanic), he said this is a common problem. He pulled the drivers side wheel, hub, axle and stub axle. The stub axle splines where it goes into the CV joint and and the internal splines in the CV joint were gone. Almost smooth even. The wheel bearing was completely wore out too. I ended up replacing the hub assembly, both the inner and outer axles. Not a cheap fix either I have about $600 repair bill, but it's back on the road now smooth and quite.
