If it runs in neutral but then dies when you put in the clutch, it is then a problem about the electrical/processor, because nothing mechanical changes that could affect the engine like adding load.

Sounds like wear on the selector lever, is the oil up to the running mark?.

Just a suggestion...if you are talking about the two speed transfer case, the vehicle must be running and in neutral to switch between gear ranges.
